Donald Trump's Maricopa problem

Clearly, the problem is Trump, whose style doesn’t sell well in Maricopa County (and in many other urban and suburban areas). As long as he is in the White House or on the ballot, the GOP has a problem in the county, and therefore in the state.

Unfortunately for Trump, he doesn’t have anywhere to turn to make up the votes he is losing in Maricopa County. Together, Maricopa and the state’s second largest county, Democratic Pima (Tucson), account for three-quarters of Arizona’s vote, and the state’s other counties simply don’t deliver a large enough number of voters to change an election outcome.

Even worse for Trump and the Arizona GOP, Maricopa is growing. Quickly.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s July 1, 2019, report on population changes, Maricopa County had the fastest growth in the country, in terms of population change, between 2010 and 2019.

In fact, Maricopa is now the fourth most populous county in the nation, ranking behind only Los Angeles County (California), Cook County (Illinois) and Harris County (Texas).

Why is that important? Because Trump and the GOP underperformed in the nation’s most populous counties in 2016 and 2018.

4. Isn't this the county of former Sheriff Asshole? (forget his name)

You know, the Sheriff that Trump pardoned at the beginning of his term? That Sheriff was/is truly a mean & nasty, corrupt piece of shit.

I ask because wasn't this county at one time very red? Very happy it's turning blue. About damn time, too!

9. I pay attention to Arizona elections because my daughter lives there

and at some point I may end up out there. I think Trump and the Republicans in general have a Maricopa problem.

Arizona has 9 congressional districts. When my daughter first moved out there, three districts were blue. When the 9th district was created after the 2010 election, it was a blue district and has remained so. In 2018, Democrats gained another one.

In 2016, my daughter called me the morning after The Debacle. She said "Mom I know this has been really bad but.....WE GOT RID OF SHERIFF JOE!!!

With all the growth, AZ is probably going to pick up at least one Congressional seat. Does anyone know if Arizona uses a commission for apportionment or the legislature.

14. Yes, an Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission is appointed after each census

The Republicans tried to get rid of the Commission a few years ago (of course they did), but, fortunately, the courts upheld that it's constitutional.

20. The irony of this lawsuit was that if they won they would have only gained

1 seat for Republicans in AZ but likely lost 4-5 in CA

Even though it would have actually reduced Republican seats nationwide AZ Rep would have gained 1 and they only cared about their narrow personal interest.

19. AZ, like CA uses a non political, non partisan commission to draw

boundaries, which must use existing political boundaries (counties), geographical boundaries (mtn ranges, rivers, etc.).

It is in the constitution and state legislature cannot impact it.

Because of this Dems have 5 seats vs 4 for Republicans.

We took back McSally's seat last election which she first one by 200 votes.

AZ system for drawing CD is, along with CA, is the best in the country.

I think with Mark Kelly doing so well, both he and Biden will get the states thumbs up!

This will help if Florida or Ohio don't flip blue this time.
