Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday defended former Vice President Joe Biden after a reporter asked if she believed allegations from Tara Reade, a former aide who says the then-senator sexually assaulted her in a secluded part of Capitol Hill in 1993.
Gillibrand, who ran for president last year, said she stood by the presumptive Democratic nominee and supported him, noting he had denied the allegations.
So when we say believe women, its for this explicit intention of making sure theres space for all women to come forward to speak their truth, to be heard, Gillibrand said during a conference call with reporters about the Postal Service.
And in this allegation, that is what Tara Reade has done. She has come forward, she has spoken, and they have done an investigation in several outlets. Those investigations, Vice President Biden has called for himself. Vice President Biden has vehemently denied these allegations, and I support Vice President Biden.
The reporter followed up by asking if Democrats who were on the front lines for the hearing into Christine Blasey Fords allegations of sexual assault against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh see any contradiction in not speaking out on Reades behalf.
No, and I stand by Vice President Biden, Gillibrand said. He has devoted his life to supporting women, and he has vehemently denied this allegation.

(6,043 posts)I supported Franken and asked him to not resign but the scapegoating of Gillibrand and ignoring of the role of Schumer and other senators is evidence of the double standard among democrats.

(95,247 posts)They cannot effectively assail of political figures without our help. Well-meaning, good-hearted people who tend to the left need to learn not to allow their better natures to be taken advantage of by vicious scum on the right, and splinterest wreckers on the far left, who enlist them in their charges against figures of the center left, by exhorting them to 'be consistent' and telling them 'don't be hypocrites'. The proper response to attempts at this is a hearty "Fuck off! Nobody cares what a rancid piece of dogshit like you thinks!" Or words to that effect....
Only attack the enemy, the christo-fascist right.
Never, ever, attack people who are on your side.
If you want one quick reason why the right wing wields power well out of proportion to the popularity of its policies, it is that they adhere to this rule, and we on the left do not.
"Defeat of a dangerous enemy is something to be for."
