SpaceX launch: local officials scramble to plan for crowds on heels of coronavirus

For nine years the Space Coast has been looking forward to the day that astronauts once again launch from Kennedy Space Center.

But now that NASA and SpaceX have said they plan to send two astronauts, Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, to the International Space Station from Kennedy Space Center pad 39A next month, local officials are scrambling to figure out how to host a major news event amid the global coronavirus pandemic.

Prior to the emergence of the novel coronavirus, a half-million or more people were expected to crowd the county's beaches, river shores and causeways to watch the historic launch. Local hotels, restaurants and tourist spots were looking forward to those crowds filling their tills.

But on the heels of the coronavirus outbreak, nobody really knows what to expect.

All of those people have to eat & shop somewhere.

This could turn the whole Space Coast into a huge hot spot.
