Whats going on:
According to The Guardian, at least 12 children in the UK needed intensive care due to a toxic shock syndrome. Some of these children have tested positive for COVID-19.
As CNN reports, Paediatric Intensive Care Society UK (PICS) warned that there is a small rise in critically-ill children who have symptoms with overlapping features of toxic shock syndrome and atypical Kawasaki disease with blood parameters.
Most of these children have Kawasaki disease.
Kawasaki disease is a childhood illness that can cause blood vessel walls to become inflamed.
According to CNN, Kawasaki symptoms can include a high temperature lasting for five days or longer, alongside a rash, swollen glands in the neck, dry cracked lips, red fingers or toes and red eyes.

(4,483 posts)(he's 36 now) we were warned by the pediatrician about Kawasaki disease being caused by certain chemicals in commercial carpet cleaners. I think even the carpet cleaning companies said not to allow small children to crawl around on the newly-cleaned carpet for several days after the cleaning, and one company even advertised their "dry" cleaning techniques that were not dangerous for children.

(2,342 posts)When he was about 12. From carpet cleaning chemicals. It was heartbreaking. A gifted athlete had to give up all sports except baseball (my sister signed a medical waiver to let him play) his heart was checked annually and when he was about 20 he was completely healed. Credit to the pediatrician who diagnosed him (1994?) when the disease was relatively unknown.
