By Emily Singer -April 29, 2020 10:10 AM
All of these politicians come from states that take more federal taxes than they pay in.
The chorus of Republican lawmakers who say they will refuse to support giving aid to Democratic-controlled states struggling with the economic fallout from the coronavirus is growing.
"Why should the people and taxpayers of America be bailing out poorly run states (like Illinois, as example) and cities, in all cases Democrat run and managed, when most of the other states are not looking for bailout help?" Trump tweeted on Monday. "I am open to discussing anything, but just asking?"
However, the blue states facing the worst coronavirus outbreaks and the biggest budget shortfalls like New York and New Jersey pay more in federal tax dollars than they get out, according to data from a Rockefeller Institute of Government study.
New York has the biggest deficit in the amount of federal tax dollars it pays compared to federal tax dollars it receives, the Rockefeller study found. New York pays $256 billion in federal taxes and receives $220.6 billion back a deficit of more than $35 billion.

(17,538 posts)Let the residents of Blue States be exempt from federal taxes and keep those tax dollars at home. But make it the policy for the rest of the states too. States like Mississippi and Kentucky would look like failing third world nations.
I do not understand how McConnell can not want to fund states that have mismanaged their affairs and still bail out Boeing, who has forgotten how to build airliners that work. What is the difference?

(82,849 posts)But Boeing and other large corporations funnel a lot of money to bribe public officials. So when they run into a spot of trouble for something that's totally not their fault (after all, Boeing just built the 737 Max, they can't be accountable!), Mitch and the Republicans are standing by to turn the cash hose on and fill up their coffers. What Boeing spends this taxpayer-funded largesse on is none of anybody's business.

(12,286 posts)The budgets of every state will crash, not just the big blue states that have had a rough go of it so far.
They are only the leading edge of the troubles.
So let these politicians paint themselves in a corner.
Soon Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas will be hat in hand asking Uncle Sam for help. They won't get the same reply, one suspects.

(22,124 posts)ranting and raving about their so called massive contributions (a deficit) when they are still dipping their dirty fingers into the pot of gold. I'd say Nancy, don't let a damn dime get spent on any of the states of the six representatives. Ungrateful brats.
Now it's time to take the gloves off, and take these idiots behind the tool shed, and give them the whooping they deserve.

But I don't know much about what the Fed's powers and responsibilities are, so have no idea if they might do something. This is just a thought.

(65,042 posts)This is a year old, but here it shows 19 more states even bigger donors, proportionally.
IL, NJ, & CT are all top 5 donor states. Surprisingly, Kansas is #1.
