The next thing we will see are people being fired who miss work for COVID 19.

Now that they are opening up states when they shouldn't I can see what happens when people go to work and get this stuff. The average time for someone with a mild case is 10 days before they feel anywhere close to well. Plus they would need to be 14 days in quarantine. Many employers would use this as a reason to terminate, at the very least the person would have something put in their file for it.

Since this virus tends to really hurt those over 50 it is just another reason to eliminate higher income workers who have worked all their lives to get where they are. They can be replaced with a young person who will work for much less money. They can't do it now because it is age discrimination, something they all hate. Pretty soon you won't have any legal means to fight a wrongful termination.

I hope I am right and this will bring about a renewal of labor unions.

That also adds up to something that does not seem popular to talk about in America, that is, homelessness and hunger and a large increase in it.

There is no real safety net to speak of. There are no significant startups for low-income housing and a big shortage of any right now since the emphasis is on luxury units.

Once you are evicted you then have a negative history which can make obtaining an apartment very difficult. You also have to come up with a deposit and first month's rent.

If you want apply for SNAP, you can't have any major assets and less than $2,000 in the bank, so you have to use up anything above that first before you get your average $6.00-per-day. If you are homeless that won't go far at all with no place to prepare meals and you are not allowed to purchase pre-cooked, hot meals at all with it.

It's coming. The new American Dream will be a place to pitch your tent and hoping that the food bank has some morsels for you and your family and that the police don't harass you and take what you have left. Nice.

Poor and immigrant workers get to choose between their health/lives and getting a check from the employer because unemployment will be denied.

It is all about breaking the Food Workers Union now that the NLRB is not up to speed .

There will be more attempts by the GOP to break more Unions. They are doing their best to break the Government Workers Union in a similiar manner.

I only remember one such incident in my 33 years in management. Company policy, within the law, was 5 consecutive days unexcused was grounds for at-will dismissal.
The union contracts were negotiated at 3 days. At least the last 4 or 5 contracts. Not sure before that.
So, this might be true, in one way or another, practically everywhere.

Their Workforce Department will be specifically denying UI if people are recalled to work but they refuse without a "valid excuse"

Where some workers are going to refuse to return to work citing safety concerns.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I support the workers. If I have to go to alternative sources for protein I'm happy to help out our local fishing industry...

I'd hate to be in a position to either face a deadly pandemic or lose unemployment benefits.

These cheap labor conservatives are trying to kill people to keep their power.
