But like I said there's a wide range of prices and brands, hoping a dr or nurse here can recommend a brand or model

We purchased from Walgreens and not Rite Aid. As long as the one that you buy reads your oxygen level, you're good.

Do a google search for fingertip oximeter reviews and read several rankings. I think you will find they are fairly similar in the models recommended. The harder part will then be finding any of those readily available, though some should be. A good athletic quality fingertip oximeter should be less than $40. It does not take a medical-grade unit to accurately show dropping SO2. Normal might register two or three percent lower than expected, but you are looking for major drops into the 80s or (hopefully not) the 70s.

If you want to use these you need to get rid of the painted fingernails and/or false nails should you have them. None of them register accurately with extreme manicures.

BTW, I have access to a medical-grade unit. At home, I use the one deployed by the National Guard. Ebay has sold them in the past. I believe this is one or very similar:

available. I did not know the price on this, but now cannot even find it as it is not in stock. I know the ones at the drug store were really expensive. I had found one looking for a backup on Amazon earlier last month, as I though mine was not working, but it was just the batteries. That one was not too bad, but they may be sold out by now.

and we bought the cheapest. It is not terribly complicated, all you need is your pulse and the O2 measurement. I think ours was $25.00 and that was a while ago. No need to spend a lot on them if you are just checking yourself from time to time.

When you go to use an oximeter don't use just your index finger, take a few measurements from different fingers...a lot of folks index fingers are somewhat more calloused than others leading to an inaccurate measurement.

I have a rare lung disease. I've been using these my whole life. They're all fine. I rather buy cheap ones from Ebay, that way I can get 2 or 3 for the price of one.

It'still working perfect.

I like that the display is invertible - in other words, I can flip the digital readout so I can read it, or a person standing facing me can read it, just by pushing the little power button a second time.

They are a very simple system really - I see no need to buy the more expensive ones - they are fragile, as I found out - broke my first one in just over a month from rough handling (opened the jaws too wide/quick).

So I bought two more -

They are all the same. I bought mine at Amazon 3-4 years ago and it's reliable and easy to use with Big numbers I can see. It has an attached lanyard if you want to hang it around your neck, a wheelchair or walker, or off the knob on your side table... Also makes as great cat teaser. You can replace the battery but it's still working on the first ones.

I ended up getting two of this model:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0117V8Q2O/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_image_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Shipping for a lot of others was too far out, I don't want to wait a month. I also wanted to have an extra for my daughter and her girls, just in case.
