Trump says internet retailers using the post office must pay more

BUSINESS NEWS APRIL 29, 2020 / 5:46 PM / UPDATED 33 MINUTES AGO

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump lambasted internet retailers again on Wednesday for taking advantage of the U.S. postal service and said those firms needed to pay more for package delivery.

“We want to stabilize the post office, and the way you do that is these companies are going to have to pay more,” Trump said. “The companies are going to have to pay a percentage of that ... loss.

1. The more you charge, the more likely Amazon is to take market share away from the post office

by doing their own deliveries and providing a delivery service for others.

9. Amazon is already using its own service for about half of its deliveries,

and it uses UPS and FedEx for most of the rest; USPS handles a relatively small percentage of Amazon's packages - so if His Lardship is trying to screw Bezos by making USPS more expensive, it won't work. I do think he wants to privatize USPS, which is already sort of private because it has to pay for itself.

Trump is deeply and fundamentally clueless on how the government works.

(or PRC), formerly called the Postal Rate Commission, is an independent regulatory agency created by the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970. Like the Postal Service, it was defined in law as an independent establishment of the executive branch.'>>>

4. Translation: WE will pay more. It's the same as with the stupid tariffs.

China isn't paying more to ship things to the US, we're paying more to get things from China.

The same would be true if the Post Office charged more. Or else companies would use other delivery systems, which in fact might be the real goal.

5. Those "rates" which Trump keeps harping on bring billions of dollars in revenue.

The Post Office is not operating at a loss because of lack of sales or "being stiffed" on rates by Amazon and the other Parcel services for their "last mile" service. The losses for the USPS stem from the tens of billions of dollars the have to spend yearly to fund pensions 75 years in advance, something that NO OTHER business is obligated to do.

Go back to pension funding system before the 2006 Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, and most of the USPS's problems go away.

I can no longer get direct shipments from Amazon. They can be shipped to a hub but I have to pick them up. In larger cities Amazon has their own delivery systems I believe.

8. Amazon still uses UPS and FedEx and to a smaller extent USPS, but

it uses its in-house service for about half of its deliveries. Screwing USPS will not screw Jeff Bezos. He's got Amazon covered.

in San Francisco arrive in actual Amazon vans. Most others are UPS. Very few are sent via USPS.
We also have Amazon lockers all over town for people who fear stuff getting stolen or who want to pick up stuff near work, etc. We used to have the traveling Amazon Treasure Truck with special deep sales on stuff, that would park in certain places for a couple of hours and move on to the next place. Amazon stopped it because of the virus.

People are hurting in the pocketbook right now the last thing we need is for companies to raise prices for shipping and products. It will trickle down to us.
