BUSINESS NEWS APRIL 29, 2020 / 5:46 PM / UPDATED 33 MINUTES AGO
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump lambasted internet retailers again on Wednesday for taking advantage of the U.S. postal service and said those firms needed to pay more for package delivery.
We want to stabilize the post office, and the way you do that is these companies are going to have to pay more, Trump said. The companies are going to have to pay a percentage of that ... loss.

(115,985 posts)and it uses UPS and FedEx for most of the rest; USPS handles a relatively small percentage of Amazon's packages - so if His Lardship is trying to screw Bezos by making USPS more expensive, it won't work. I do think he wants to privatize USPS, which is already sort of private because it has to pay for itself.

Trump is deeply and fundamentally clueless on how the government works.

(7,220 posts)China isn't paying more to ship things to the US, we're paying more to get things from China.
The same would be true if the Post Office charged more. Or else companies would use other delivery systems, which in fact might be the real goal.

(11,760 posts)The Post Office is not operating at a loss because of lack of sales or "being stiffed" on rates by Amazon and the other Parcel services for their "last mile" service. The losses for the USPS stem from the tens of billions of dollars the have to spend yearly to fund pensions 75 years in advance, something that NO OTHER business is obligated to do.
Go back to pension funding system before the 2006 Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, and most of the USPS's problems go away.

(7,518 posts)I can no longer get direct shipments from Amazon. They can be shipped to a hub but I have to pick them up. In larger cities Amazon has their own delivery systems I believe.

(15,696 posts)in San Francisco arrive in actual Amazon vans. Most others are UPS. Very few are sent via USPS.
We also have Amazon lockers all over town for people who fear stuff getting stolen or who want to pick up stuff near work, etc. We used to have the traveling Amazon Treasure Truck with special deep sales on stuff, that would park in certain places for a couple of hours and move on to the next place. Amazon stopped it because of the virus.
