Washington Rep. Adam Smith: Pentagon should not 'suck up to the president'
The job of U.S. military leaders in the Pentagon is not to "suck up to the president," the chairman of the powerful House Armed Services Committee, U.S. Rep. Adam Smith said Wednesday night, repeating his call that Capt. Brett Crozier be reinstated as captain of the COVID-19-plagued aircraft carrier U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt.
Capt. Crozier was fired a month ago, after the San Francisco Chronicle printed a letter in which he called attention to spread of the COVID-19 pandemic aboard the carrier. More than 900 of the TR's 4,000-plus crew have since tested positive, including Crozier. One crew member has died.
After a preliminary investigation, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michael Gilday took the unprecedented step last Friday of recommending that Capt. Crozier be reinstated to his command.
But the reinstatement recommendation was put on hold after being presented to U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper. A "deeper review" was ordered on Monday. There have been widespread reports in Washington, D.C., that senior Pentagon brass are afraid they will incur the wrath of President Trump.
