Pences outraged after reporter leaks off-the-record memo revealing they lied to the public

Pence and his wife outraged after reporter leaks off-the-record memo revealing they lied to the public

Vice President Mike Pence showed up to the Mayo Clinic on Tuesday not wearing a face mask even though it was the organization's policy that everyone in attendance do so. After the incident caught major media attention, Pence's wife took to the airwaves to defend him, claiming he just simply didn't know.

"It was actually after he left Mayo Clinic that he found out that they had a policy of asking everyone to wear a mask," Karen Pence said Wednesday morning on Fox News.

Even though Pence was ridiculed for the event, that was pretty much all there was to the story. But, it's not.

Steve Herman, who covers the White House for Voice of America, spilled the beans about a memo that Vice President Pence's office sent to reporters BEFORE their trip to the Mayo Clinic.

“All of us who traveled with [Pence] were notified by the office of VP the day before the trip that wearing of masks was required by the Mayo Clinic and to prepare accordingly."

The tweet enraged Pence's staff who claimed he violated the off-the-record terms of a planning memo that had been sent to him and other reporters before the Vice President's trip. It's important to note that they're not claiming Herman is a liar. No, not at all. They're claiming he shouldn't have spilled the beans to the world on this which is only embarrassing Vice President Pence and his wife for denying they knew of the face mask policy.

A copy of the document obtained by the Washington Post verified Herman's story, which read: https://sourcepolitics.com/vp-pence-and-his-wife-outraged-after-reporter-leaks-off-the-record-memo-revealing-they-lied-to-the-public/?fbclid=IwAR1lmi7BGn-lxOS6uzidb-EzLaEZG25gtHg5A_PV6ZAWYA9tOUi00QPfqj8

My dad was a Washington print journalist from 1950 to 2000. Nothing made him more furious than when people lied to his face and he knew it. He was used to angry calls from (mostly) Republican Senators, Congressmen, Governors, even the occasional Whits House, but I don't think he ever printed one retraction, because he never published anything until he had verified it as true.

His paper was from a one horse town in upstate New York. I'll PM you with the specific one.

He joined them almost right out of journalism school (Columbia, class of 1947). He thought at first it was a step to bigger and better things, but he really liked his publisher and his family. In the late 1940s, they got the radical idea of having a permanent representation in Washington. Development of the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the local defense industry was getting to be a big deal for them, and the stories about appropriation bills and interviews with Great Lakes States Senators, Governors and members of Congress just weren't getting to them in a timely manner. Still in his late 20s, my dad was at the time covering the Statehouse in Albany for them. They asked him if he would be willing to move to Washington and open a full-time representation for them. This was a really radical move at the time. Usually it was the practice of the small regional papers to get their stories from the big papers or the wire services, (AP, UPI, NANA, etc.) In 1950, he made the move. If you ponder which Senators and House members from Great Lakes States rose to national prominence in that time, the list is staggering. Humphrey and Mondale from Minnesota, Dirksen from Illinois, Phil Hart and Gerry Ford from Michigan, Hugh Scott from Pennsylvania, Jake Javits, Bobby Kennedy and Mario Cuomo from NY, plus whoever the Canadian ambassador was at the time, just to name a few, you understand why his job led him to know a LOT of people, and it didn't matter any more that his paper wasn't the New York Times or the Washington Post or the Chicago Tribune.

When Bob Novak, the right-wing pundit, first arrived in DC from Chicago in 1957, he had the good sense to ask around who could show him the ropes as a green newbie in Washington. He was sent to my dad's office, who, by that time, knew his way around. Despite their profound political differences, they remained friends until my dad died 43 years later.

The era of the surviving small-town independent newspaper is close to done, and even his paper has since closed their Washington bureau. It's no longer a minor financial undertaking for a small regional newspaper to maintain a full-time representation in D.C., and anyway, a young cub reporter could never afford the price of housing in DC or one of the close suburbs any more. Imagine that when I was 7 or 8, my dad used to sometimes take me with him to the Capitol (we just walked in, no security or metal detectors, that stuff was science fiction in the 1950s), and I would hang around with him and his "friends" in the Senate Press Gallery. My friends were all named Billy, Jimmy, Tim, Bobby, and I never understood later why all of his friends had the same goofy first name: "Senator." Who calls their kid "Senator?"

Oh, wait. They don't believe in anything so don't have to confess to anyone.

. . . That can be read by anybody could possibly be construed as "off the record", the idea that Pence didn't figure out what's what until after his visit to the Mayo Clinic is stupid beyond belief.

You walk into a building during an infectious disease outbreak and EVERYONE is wearing a mask and you think that it's a fashion choice?! If you're not lying Mr. White-bread-and-mayonnaise-hold-all-the-seasonings, then you are as dense as granite.

And when something is recorded on a piece of paper that is publicly available, then it is the very definition of being "on the record".

I would also like to say that I know people from my past as a "born-again" Christian whom I still respect even though I disagree with them strongly. I have zero respect for Pence. And if I did still believe in Jesus and the biblical God and the Bible as actual and sacred truth, I would be so very ashamed of Pence and his ilk.

Obviously , you were summoned by your Supreme Leader (no, not Jesus, silly) to go about your business as if everything was hunky-dory. Anything else and his poll numbers would drop off even more than they have.

So why lie when the truth is known to all of us?

Because it feels good, doesn't it Mike? I mean, you and Jeebs have a plan and you'll be heaven-sent anyway, isn't that the truth? You're not worried about eternal salvation. You just want to rule your land and turn it into a Christofascist regime. So Jesus forgives you the tiny white lies you tell the people, since you'll be raising his flag in battle with democracy and the will of the people one day.

In former times, the Pences would either be tied up a burning stake....or setting the stake ablaze.
