I need to inform my employer imminently about upcoming vacation plans for the summer. I have to decide whether to take my 2 weeks in June or to stick to my original plan to take the 2 weeks off in August so that 1 of those weeks could be spent attending the DNC as a spectator. I'd just soak up the atmosphere of Milwaukee. Maybe be part of the crowds that usually gather outside to watch the MSNBC hosts broadcast from their outside locations. I can't imagine large crowds being allowed to gather by then but one can dream. I'd also be excited just to be in the city and pick up what I can from the convention even if large crowds aren't allowed to gather.
However, if the convention is likely to be a virtual one or just a 1 day event, it's not worth travelling there as I'm on the west coast. I'm also kind of burnt out and could use a sooner vacation if the DNC isn't likely to be a typical convention this cycle. So, what's your best guess? Do you think there will be some kind of typical 4-day convention event in Milwaukee that is worth going to or would you permanently shelve this idea if you were me? I'm having a hard time deciding when to book.

(Nothing against Milwaukee, it's just going to be hot. At least there will be beer.)

(11,256 posts)This is all uncharted water, and anyone claiming to know the answer is almost certainly lying. My guess - and that's all it is - is that there's no way we'll be able to loosen restrictions enough by then to allow it to happen.

(29,674 posts)I know several unions have chosen to have virtual conventions this summer due to everything going on. It's not beyond the realm of possibility that the DNC will do the same.

(54,363 posts)Last time I was at one of those things (Denver 2008 to nominate Obama), I was a little late in booking a room. I was offered a few suites at $2000 a day, and few private rooms for over $1000 per day, and that was twelve years ago. Luckily, I was able to find a college student who was looking to rent his tiny student apartment for the whole month for $450. I took it for the 4 days, and told him he could rent it out again for the rest of the time if he wanted. It meant I had to walk an extra ten minutes in each direction to the tram. Big deal. I wasn't going to pay $4000+ for the privilege. Besides, there was a building rented out near me where a few side events were being held, and you could hang with Amy Goodman, Greg Palast, Don Siegelman, John Nichols, and a few others that weren't on the "big" program. Well worth the price of admission, which was zero.
FYI, the best information I have from my few contacts at the DNC are that they so far haven't the faintest idea what the are going to do yet.

(65,001 posts)...might be better options. Lake County IL has lots of hotel space and is closer to Milwaukee than Madison by roughly 20 miles.
