30 million Americans lose their jobs

More than 30 million American workers have lost their jobs in a historic six-week period as economists warned the grim toll could add to pressure to reopen the US economy.

Some 3.8 million people made new claims for jobless benefits in the week ending April 25 as the coronavirus fallout wreaks havoc in the world’s largest economy, the US Department of Labor revealed.

Economists warned the unemployment rate is likely to have skyrocketed to 16pc in April, raising the risk of economic scarring slowing the recovery in the US.

Another week of shocking job losses will fuel calls for the world’s biggest economy to be re-opened as states start to unilaterally relax lockdowns.

This is not the end, or even the middle, but just the starting phase of this crisis, overall.

The vested interests want to get it started again and reboot the same old machine quickly, all lives and health be damned.

It looks to me like the faults in this system and the coming, cascading system failures are going to call for some drastic changes on our side of the equation. It's an opportunity and something to give careful thought to while we go into the next phases of a worsening crisis.

Rather than fear, we should keep in mind that things have to change one way or another. The machine is telling us something very bad, not outright, but with the very spin it is using to exonerate its culpability.

Historical context is a powerful tool, so people can wrap their head around what's happening under conservative rule.

This one needs updating.

“We’re going to win. We’re going to win so much. We’re going to win at trade, we’re going to win at the border. We’re going to win so much, you’re going to be so sick and tired of winning, you’re going to come to me and go ‘Please, please, we can’t win anymore.’ You’ve heard this one. You’ll say ‘Please, Mr. President, we beg you sir, we don’t want to win anymore. It’s too much. It’s not fair to everybody else.’ And I’m going to say ‘I’m sorry, but we’re going to keep winning, winning, winning, We’re going to make America great again.’” — Donalt Scheissnozzle
