These families have had bitter policy disputes with Democrats over the years, but this is different. Given their history of public service in government, they know what it takes to be president. They've seen how this president has treated our FBI, DOJ, our foreign service professionals, our CDC, our NIH, etc. Some of these people worked for Bush I and Bush II. They know about Putin's influence. They know about Ukraine. They know how he has bundled the pandemic response. Bush I and John McCain both served in the military.
They know that America's standing in the world has diminished greatly.
They know Joe Biden well. They know him. They may not agree with his policies but they know that Biden won't embarass us on the world's stage. We won't be a laughing stock.
Their endorsements could go a long way towards winnowing away some Republican support for Trump, esp. in the swing states and in particular certain suburban communities in those states.

(2,022 posts)They might not endorse Trump (don't know what they did in 2016) but I doubt is will make any difference to the swing voters.

(35,445 posts)If nothing else, it will piss Trump off, and when he's pissed off, he makes big mistakes.

(6,690 posts)Someone like GW has nothing to lose at this point by openly saying he can't endorse DJT but I don't know if anyone has even asked. It's fairly clear he's not a fan but generally follows the tradition of shutting up about it after leaving office.
Romney has already said as much though not directly.

(35,445 posts)Otherwise, everything they've ever said or stood for in their political lives is a complete lie. Bush II has sent men and women into two wars. More than anyone, he should understand the need for this country to lead. He knows the damage that Trump is doing to us on the international stage.
Endorse Biden or be associated with Trump forever.

(13,058 posts)They both want to maintain their standing in the Republican Party and they know that Trump's supporters would never forgive them if they were to endorse Biden.
As far as Cynthia McCain goes, I don't think it would make much difference what she does.
