3. It's possible, but it's more likely that he just doesn't care,

and that his megalomania and feelings of victimhood are so extreme that he can only think about how great he is and how unfairly treated he has been. So what if Lincoln was assassinated; before that he never was treated as badly as I have been. this wasn't ignorance of history, just something staggeringly stupid to say on many levels.

he was saying talking about how "hostile" the press was to him, a favorite trope of his, and as he was standing in lincoln's shadow, he decided it would be cool to whine about how the press is treating him even worse than it treated lincoln.

which isn't remotely true, of course, but more to the point, he said it in a way that let people think the statement was meant more generally than just a whine about his press treatment.
