Don't look now, but the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season could break records

Parts of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans saw record-high temperatures last month. Meanwhile, the average ocean temperature worldwide came in just shy of the record set in 2016.

On Saturday morning, a tropical depression formed in the eastern Pacific Ocean — the earliest tropical cyclone in that area since reliable record-keeping began in the early 1970s.

These two facts are related: Warming water is changing the size and frequency of tropical storms. And new forecasts show that this year’s Atlantic hurricane season, which will take place between June and November, is shaping up to be among the worst we’ve ever experienced.

12. They are mostly anchored

Wandering around is pretty expensive, thousands of dollars per mile.

And given that few shipments are being initiated, the likelihood of a spill is probably less this year.

13. How close are they to coasts that could be hit by hurricanes

That is actually the danger. Out in the oceans they have room to maneuver - anchored close to a shore they are more vulnerable to damage.

But once it forms and it has projected plot, they pull up anchor and move.

Even during normal operations, this is how it works. They are just a little more stationary now, but they are fully crewed and can be underway pretty rapidly.

Every now and then one will run in the wrong direction. That happened a couple years ago and had a tragic outcome.

with a poor response before November, could pretty much do Trump in.

No matter what he predicts with his "Sharpie magic". It is pretty clear that this administration does not prepare ahead for disasters, it just tries to make excuses afterward. It's probably not even on his radar and won't be until he gets slammed by the press after the fact.

in early March. Local authorities have already indicated they are unlikely to issue evacuation orders for a Cat 1 or 2 in the coastal communities. If we have a 3 or stronger heading towards us, it will be impossible to both evacuate and social distance. People will have to choose which risk they are more willing to accept.

It has not only been predicted to be a busy and strong hurricane season, but likely to begin earlier than normal. Most of our really bad storms in recent years have been late August through October. The way things are now, a June or July major hurricane would not surprise me in the least.

We only have one more thing to do at home to be prepared for the season...as best as anyone can prepare I suppose.

If I were a praying person, I'd be down on my knees begging for the forecast to be very very wrong.
