Why that specifically?

Because that is roughly 1% of the total US population (assuming there are about 375 million total people in the country - legal or otherwise).

At 3,750,000, the virus is officially killing 1% of the total population and that is the arbitrary line that they are going to choose as their hill to die on. Why? To hijack the argument that the 1% are in control of the economy and the country and turn it on its head...

Democrats (correctly) have pointed out the disparities in wealth and opportunity between the top 1% and the bottom 99%...but Trump and his cronies, in their reptile brains, see a chance to re-frame the issue by claiming THEY (the GOP) support the working man and the 99% more than Democrats, who they will say are only interested in saving the 1% of the population.

That will be all that they need. Its just like "e-mails" or "Benghazi" or "Whitewater" or "Lewinski" or any other drummed up, BS 'controversy' that can distract their base and at the same time get them ginned up for battle.

The "acceptable" total is always 0, when the deaths are preventable and always 'as few as we can possibly make it' when the deaths are out of our control. But for the current GOP and their ghoulish fanboys, the actual number is 3,749,999 dead Americans...

Currently, on May 5, 2020, there are about 1,200,000 confirmed cases. We know from isolated studies that from 50-80% of those infected are asymptomatic and most never know they had COVID-19. Let's be generous as use the 80% number. That would mean about 6,000,000 people have been infected.

Now, we have about 71,000 confirmed deaths. The real number is likely higher by 20,000 or so based on death rate analysis, but again, let's be generous and say it's 71,000. That's a death rate of about 1.2%.

That doesn't sound too scary, right? Wait.

If we lift social distancing restrictions, the estimates are that viral penetration could vary between 30% and 70% of the population. 30% represents estimate based on moderate social distancing and 70% with fewer restrictions. A 30% viral penetration results in 108,900,000 people getting infected. Let's says that way over estimates viral penetration and it's more like 10% or about 33,000,000 people.

That would mean 396,000 people dead. With treatment improvements, maybe we can save a third of those people. Many survivors will have permanent organ damage.
