Because of the way CV is spreading in meat packing plants, several groups have called for Meatless May, a throw back to a WW1 effort to ration meat.

Snip--"One of the countrys largest Latino organizations is calling for a boycott of processed meat, due to outbreaks of the coronavirus at meat packing plants. The League of United Latin American Citizens also known as LULAC is calling on consumers to join their Meatless May campaign.
This is again the time for people in America to speak up
for safety and health procedures for these workers, says Joe Henry, a Des Moines area leader in LULAC, to make sure that we have justice in the workplace.
Henry and other advocates say in addition to COVID-19 testing for all employees at food processing plants, the corporate owners of the plants should provide paid sick leave and slow down production lines so workers can stand farther apart."

I currently have a freezer well stocked, probably some two months' worth of meat. Mainly some porkchops and boneless chicken breasts. I also have some Italian sausage that will become a spicy sausage casserole, and will probably yield at least 9 or 10 meals for me. that's with one pound of sausage.
I also simply don't eat very much at this point in my life, and so my biggest concern is being able to buy and fix small enough quantities so that I don't have much waste.
Added on edit: I just moved a turkey from the freezer to the fridge to thaw. It will probably be baked on Sunday or Monday. After a few days of eating it, I'll be packaging up meat for future meals: turkey pot pie, turkey tetrazzini, turkey soup, and perhaps other meals.

(13,567 posts)months supply last four if it had to. I've been on a diet for 20 months, so it's not that hard. I'm trying to hold it to under seven ounces a day. It already looks like around here, it's going to be get what you can for meat and don't be too picky. I hope to just replace what I use every other week.
I baked two hams the last couple weeks. Portioned that out and saved the bones and drippings for soup. I have a good supply of pinto beans and just made my first batch of refried beans. Those turned out great and I might not even miss taco meat in my tacos too much.
I have quite a bit of non meat high protein foods stashed like beans and peanut butter. I'm starting now using more of that and less meat in case it gets really bad.

(25,841 posts)I've been relatively poor, and had to really count pennies when buying food. So when I must, I can really make the food dollar go a long way.
For me, one good thing about this lockdown has been I'm saving a ton of money.

(990 posts)Haven't been to the grocery store since March 12. Using what is in the pantry and freezer. Amazing what just a couple of ounces of meat can do to flavor a big batch of beans, etc. which will feed me for many days. Thankfully I don't suffer from food fatigue and if a particular dish is getting a little boring, into the freezer it goes for a couple of future meals.
Now to be fair, my pantry is well stocked - buying in bulk and preserving produce in season is just the way I function. Always have. I think it comes from growing up on a rather isolated farm in the 1950's. And quite frankly during this current mess, I'm quite thankful I was well stocked. No worry about finding flour, yeast, etc. I also have greens which over wintered in pots on the deck and now the garden is beginning to produce lettuce, etc. I consider myself very lucky.
But I will have to go Costco soon - Zeus Dog is nearly out of his favorite chew treats. An empty treat shelf would be disaster - at least in his little doggie brain. Yes ... I buy dog treats in bulk. 😀

(25,841 posts)My usual routine is to buy approximately a week's worth of groceries at a time. In fact, when I see on line articles about what you can fix with what's in your pantry, I laugh out loud. I simply, even now, don't have that much in my pantry.
What's changed for me is how far ahead I plan. In the past it was for a week, usually a bit less. Now I'm looking forward a whole lot farther. But not really beyond one or two months.
For one thing, my meals often depend on fresh veggies. In a couple of weeks, as in after a turkey I'm currently thawing is used, I'll start a round of meals that involved sauteed vegetables. Veggies only keep so long in the refrigerator.

Got some frozen stuff standing by, and I see the fast-food joints are already feeling the tip of this latest iceberg:
It's not great--and I'm pretty anxious about the rest of the supply chain, as last week my grocery store seemed almost empty of fresh vegetables--but hopefully we can see this latest MAGA-induced disaster through.

I guess the way I'm feeling about that is the way that people who eat meat are feeling about not getting their staples. But I feel super lucky that we can get food at all, really. It's not like WWII where everything was in short supply.
