Around 30 million people have, through no fault of their own, lost their jobs in the last two months. Most of these people either can't go back to work because there's no job for them to go to, or don't want to go back to work because they don't want to catch COVID-19 and risk dying or infecting those around them.
The Republican plan to deal with this situation is:
1) Provide no additional unemployment benefits, so millions of former employees are screwed.
2) Provide no additional stimulus funds, so millions of former contract workers are screwed.
3) Abolish Obamacare, so millions of people who no longer have employer-based health insurance are screwed.
4) Cut payroll taxes, which does nothing for people who no longer have a paycheck, and also so people who rely on Social Security will be screwed down the line.
5) Pretend that the pandemic isn't as bad as it seems, so gullible people are screwed.
Why? Well, because they're a bunch of sociopaths, obviously, and cruelty is part of their political ideology.
But also, because getting Trump re-elected on the back of "the world's greatest economy of all time" was literally THE ONLY thing that Republicans were betting on this year. They know most Americans hate Trump. They just hoped that enough people would be satisfied with the economy that they would shrug and give him another four years. Running on the economy was plan A, B, C, D and E.
And now we're on plan F: Fuck you, America. Either go out there and risk catching COVID-19 or stay at home and starve to death.
All because they have this fantasy that they can somehow magically kickstart the economy before November and everybody will forget that any of this happened.
Absolutely insane.

(3,479 posts)The unemployment rate is close to DOUBLE what it was at the height of the Great Recession. There's no quick fix for this and forcing Americans to go back to work (and into harms away) isn't going to bring back the economy President Fart Fumes inherited.
President Biden will have his work cut out for him.

(24,402 posts)Like people aren't going to notice bodies piling up around them? How is the economy going to come roaring back in time for November if people are too sick or.......dead........to work?! The virus is not gone and we don't have a vaccine, let alone proven and effective treatments. For the most part, once things open back up, we're going pretty much just going back to how things were in January-March with only maybe slightly more caution.

(10,667 posts)The Republicans are either
1. expecting to not retain power and so want to burn the place down and kill as many people as possible on the way out
2. planning on stealing the election and want to burn the place down and kill as many people as possible
This bs that I keep reading that he is doing this or that to help his re-election chances is just that. BS.

(4,241 posts)Which senior wouldn't want to go to "God's waiting room"? FL gov DeSantis didn't mention that these seniors would rather be visiting with family, bike riding, playing cards, dancing, swimming, etc. He didn't mention the drowning feeling of not being able to breathe, the fever, the depression, the isolation, etc. etc. But hey - you get to go to "God's waiting room".

(68,539 posts)The Republicans have became used to being bailed out by social issues...but when the country is failing economically and a dangerous pandemic has kill thousands of Americans and will kill more than double that by November most likely, Trump is going to lose and badly.
Trump is to blame for every single death. He cared more about his reelection than the American people and did nothing during the early days when it mattered.
This could be the realignment election, we have been waiting for. We may win the Senate, additional seats in the House and a landslide presidential election.

SF writers have foretold this scenario when those in the gated communities can't leave because the outside environment is so toxic.
All those multi-million yachts and secluded island sanctuaries won't last for that long. In 20-30 years, your havens will be over-run with desparates (and deplorables) and rodents looking for food.
Grave-diggers and morticians may be a niche occupation for a little while, but because they are probably more exposed, they will be digging their own.
