I've been watching Judy Woodruf's roots since this all began. For a month or more there was a little gray spot at the back of the part that came and went. Then it disappeared. Did the hairdresser come to her home? But now along the part it's just a teensy bit darker. I'm guessing she's getting remote instructions on doing it herself.
For a few nights Rachel and some other people (men included) looked like they'd done their own makeup. But that's sort of faded.
Have any of you noticed the COVID effects on TV personalities' looks?

I should have gone with my initial idea of just ignoring your thread. My bad.

(13,783 posts)... that you may have assumed, when I said it was "darker" along the part, that she hadn't colored the roots. But she had, just not perfectly, because her roots are white. If it had been perfect I wouldn't have seen it at all. I've seen it grow out at the crown and she's 73 years old, so I know her roots aren't naturally darker.
I'm aware that it can be done easily, just not perfectly enough for TV lights by an amateur.
Anyway, this whole sub-thread is a fascinating illustration of how people misunderstand each other in all good faith. I'm constantly educated about that in DU. It's part of what makes it interesting.

(53,410 posts)Ive found it interesting to see the people Ive always seen on the news stations I watch looking like regular people. With lighting that isnt perfectly positioned to flatter them or makeup designed to make them have perfect skin tones sans imperfections. As an artist who draws human models I am truly enjoying looking at them. And its charming to see them in their own homes, making an effort to make their backgrounds look professional. Putting bookcases in the background shows a real effort to look educated and professional. I appreciate their imperfect looks which I like much better than the plastic ones with perfect hair, skin and flattering lighting.

(25,300 posts)You can create temporary low lights with sprays and powder.
LeftInTX
(25,300 posts)There are temporary sprays and powders. A slight mismatch of color is actually normal because our roots are naturally darker than the rest of our hair. As long as you don't have roots lighter than than rest of your hair, hot roots or a line, then it looks natural.
With the sprays and powders you can created a more natural look by drawing down the hair shaft.
Temporary sprays and powders can cover up some home goofs too.
So you can do a root touch up with a dye kit and enhance the result with temporary sprays and powders.
One local newscaster is obviously dying his own hair and it looks brassy...LOL (He's a Republican, so I think it's funny)

(25,300 posts)I'm a Revlon Colorsilk gal. I have been for years.
I do purchase a separate 10 volume developer from Sally's. The developer is dirt cheap. The 20 volume developer in the box is too strong and causes brassiness. My hair was naturally very ashy with no red undertones.

I wouldn't really mind the gray roots so much but my highlights were looking really brassy and combined with the gray roots -
I ended up buying a no-ammonia temp color that will wash out in a month. I might do my roots pink after that. Depends on if my daughter is still getting married in July or not.

(50,949 posts)I do use Excellence, and it really does do a good job. Covers the gray really well, and its easy to put on. I found that the color was pretty true to what's on the box, too.
I'm tempted to go with that emerald green color. I just love it. But I'm a red-head and it's tough to get colors that work right with my underlying color.

(8,171 posts)I will try the excellence when my current color washes out, I always tend to go too dark so it may take a while!

Makeup isn't that difficult if they are just doing simple things. THey can easily learn to apply less/more of something. It's not like they are doing huge makeovers .

No one, however, has gotten as bad as that male reporter years ago who up and decided to go from dark brown to silver and just let it all grow out bit by bit. Someone at the station should have asked him if he was aware that the camera was fully registering this weird bathtub-ring effect on his head.
Speaking of silver roots, I have not been able to go to my hairdresser since January. From the front, the light brown and silver kind of comb together in the curls, but when I look at the back of my head with a hand-mirror, there is a flat palm-sized spot at the crown that is really obvious. Oh dear.
