Today was my day to get my check. When I checked my account this morning, a check was there. I went back to check my account tonight, and the check was gone. I will have to call my bank tomorrow to find out what the deal is.

(268 posts)and they forced me to deposit it first and then withdraw the money. It HAD to be deposited and it took 3 people discussing before they would let me withdraw it.

(21,714 posts)It has just disappeared from existence. It doesn't even show that it was deposited and then removed.

(268 posts)This situation is insane. I am sorry it happened to you. Were you able to speak to a human being at your bank?

(33,643 posts)always works ... you can't just 'cash a check' at your bank anymore. It has to be deposited and withdrawn. Nothing unique about this check in that regard.

(268 posts)It's been a long time since I tried to cash a check.

(65,010 posts)...government checks. Not many though. The independent bank chain a few blocks from my house allows it.
I haven't done it, but I've seen people do it when in there to deposit sub checks.

(11,230 posts)Creditors can snatch your coronavirus stimulus check if you have outstanding debts.

(33,643 posts)A court-ordered Tax Lien, a default on a student loan, court order against you for non-support, that sort of thing.
It's not any old 'outstanding debt' like you owe 1200 on your visa card and your 30 days past due on a minimum payment so Capital One can reach in and take your 1200 ... or the like.
Basically if you'd instead deposited a paycheck and some or all of it would be garnished directly from your bank account ... good chance that's where your IRS check went.
It's very unlikely a person would be unaware that their bank account is subject to garnishment, it's usually an involved process a person isn't going to be unaware of.

(12,629 posts)just help itself. You should never be a debtor and creditor to the same bank.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)kind of thing.
For example just having a credit line with them (which is an 'outstanding debt') would not allow them to steal your IRS check any more than it would allow them to steal your paycheck.
If you were in default on that card (like >90 days past due) they'd have to sue you to garnish your account just like a different bank would have to (unless you signed something in the beginning waiving the right for your account to be protected, I suppose that's possible to have happen esp. in red state banks).
Very very few sources of income (like a Social Security check) are protected from legal garnishments, and these relief checks were not in that category, that much is true.
But I've seen no evidence that they were put into some special class of being MORE easily garnished from you than a paycheck or other, regular sorts of income.

(12,629 posts)And I heard that creditors aren't allowed to grab the checks. Not sure if the creditors are listing to what they are told

(4,787 posts)That would show both transactions, generally with a notation of some kind which might let you know (at the least) where the funds went.

(38,187 posts)The US government NEVER gives money. So, this is so unusual that I expect it to disappear. I'm not counting on that money and am keeping it so I don't have to depend on it in case they take it back. We'll pay it back, one way or another, you know? This is the greedy ass US government we are talking about. Those greedy, selfish pigs in our government would arrest us and have us thrown in prison for life if we so much as picked up a penny in the parking lot on any government property. Let's be real here. We KNOW how they really think. They think in terms of we have to give them money for them to turn around and tell us what we pay in is something we never deserve to have back, even if it was supposed to be a deal....even Social Security, the deal of deals. They call it entitlements we don't deserve to have when WE paid it.

(14,274 posts)Depending on what time a file is processed, an incoming credit will appear, then disappear for a few hours while the settlement file processes. Initially you will only have access to $200.00 of that deposit. I would venture to guess it hard posts to your account overnight and you will see the post again and the funds will be available in full.
