Americans fear too-rapid reopening during coronavirus, poll says
A total 63% of Americans fear reopening the country too quickly while the COVID-19 pandemic continues to claim thousands of lives and, lately, spread across Middle America, according to a new survey taken by The Washington Post and the University of Maryland.
The poll comes as a vocal minority, organized by conservative groups across the country, demonstrates for a "return to normal" and attack governors who say limits in contact are the key to controlling the novel coronavirus. Half of the 50 states, including Washington, have begun some relaxation of stay-home rules.
In the Post/MAryland survey, 56% of those surveyed say they are comfortable shopping for groceries at a supermarket. But only 33% say they would feel comfortable shopping at a reopened retail store. Just 22%, at this time, would feel comfortable dining at a sit-down restaurant. Such states as Georgia and Texas have begun reopening restaurants.
"We can't keep our country closed: We have to reopen our country," President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, flying to Phoenix on Air Force One and making a mask-less visit to a plant that makes masks for health care workers.
