They project. This has been an obvious fact.

Think of them as a movie projector. There is a film produced by propaganda and conspiracy theories. The plot of the movie is about their desires and intents. They don't understand this process. They see the movie projected on the paranoid screen of their enemies, (as scripted by their manipulators) and believe what they are seeing is "out there", though all the while, it is self revealing, but a denial of the shadow elements.

Even many of the worst in history may not have thought of themselves as the problem or dirty, rotten scoundrels. Often, the projection helps them to deny their malevolence and assume they are good people doing the right thing for the right reason, when, in fact, the best means by used the worst people has the worst result in reality.

We are dealing with some deep and even systemic social psychology here. It goes far deeper than the superficial aspects that we might criticize and denigrate. It even transcends the stupidity that appears to facilitate it.

I don't think things got so crazy so fast. We are seeing the crazy that's been incubating being incited and encouraged by leaders and so it is emerging into the limelight quickly. The roaches are coming out of the wood work and they are all over the table.

It's been nearly 40+ years of unchecked hate and aggression being spewed from right wing radio and eventually Fox News. They are doing everything they can to destroy the progress being made and fighting back against those of us that are taking this thing seriously.

Nobody likes this, we all want to get back to the plans we had before the pandemic. But when we do it's not going to be like someone will snap their fingers and it will be back to normal. The economic losses are going to stick with us for a long time to come, as will the physical losses.

It's been fomenting for a long time through right-wing media, though, and TV-watching Trump just came along to become their "Fox News President".

Many of them hold onto MYTHS for dear life, and the "damn liberals" have long-annoyed them with expressions of doubt about religion, the "greatness" of the USA, the "greatness" of USA historical figures, etc.

There's little doubt in my mind that Fox News COULD generate a war with an old-time ally, if they wanted. Trump would see the lies and say that there's now evidence that the UK (for example) has been secretly plotting to kill him and take over the USA. Then Fox would show Trump making the comments, like he's a source of actual intelligence. And so goes the lying feedback loop.
The UK is probably too extreme an example, but it gets across the idea.

Often I feel that the country is way too divided to go back to a different time (as if there has ever been a better different time where Blacks or Women were treated fairly).

It may boil down to one of two choices. The first is that we peacefully divide up the USA into two seperate parts, complex, but doable. The second is we go to war with them at some point.

A lot of here have held the opinion that MAGATS would die off, but 63 million people voted for Trump, a lot of them are young. If anyone paid attention to the gun toters at rallies, there were plenty of young men, there were also lots of young women in those assaults on democracy. They aren't just going to go away and we have a sane world.
