The drug Trump has been touting for weeks flops yet again in another coronavirus study

Bottom line? Don't get medical advice from this guy:

----
Hydroxychloroquine fails to help hospitalized coronavirus patients in US funded study
Berkeley Lovelace Jr.

Hydroxychloroquine, a decades-old malaria drug touted by President Donald Trump, didn’t appear to help hospitalized patients with Covid-19, according to a new observational study published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health and conducted by researchers at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City, looked at 1,376 consecutive patients who showed up at the emergency room with symptoms of coronavirus.

Nearly 60%, or 811 of the patients, received the drug within 48 hours and were found, on average, to be more severely ill than those who didn’t receive the drug, the researchers said.

In the middle of plunging state revenues and facing a huge budget deficit, our morons went out and blew 2 million bucks on this quackery.

Because Republicans.

4. From what I have seen in the news regarding Hydrochloroquine (HCQ)
Thu May 7, 2020, 04:22 PM
May 2020

it has ONLY worked as a prophylactic drug, when administered EARLY as soon as symptoms appear.
It does NOT work after the patient becomes sick enough to need hospitalization.

Point is trials should be with patients NOT in hospitals already. The trials are correct in that very sick patients derive no benefit from HCQ.
However HCQ may have a value as a preventive medicaiton (prophylactic).

Chloroquine has been shown to have a beneficial effect on SARS in vitro since 2005, that's probably why the Chinese starting using it when the outbreak first appeared and probably what prompted the French doctor (Raoult) to try HCl. Lately I've read a couple of articles with more positive results but again they're not rigorous clinical trials. It would be wonderful if it works as part of an early treatment cocktail since Remdesivir is hard to come by, not easy to manufacture and requires daily injections.

I'm most anxiously awaiting clinical results of Avigan, early results were better than the chloroquines and I don't think it's a particularly difficult drug to manufacture. It's a pill so you don't have to go the hospital and again preliminary evidence suggests it works best when the virus is in its early stages.

In the meantime doctors seem to be learning a little more every week about what the virus is doing to the body and are better refining treatment protocol for patients. I'm hoping if people start going to the hospital when their oxygen levels start dropping we can get a better survival rate. Too many people showing up at the hospital are in bad condition, many times unaware just how sick they are.

all the negative studies about chloroquine are a big conspiracy because they hate Trump.

Same with Jim Bakker, they hate him too so they say his silver potion doesn't work.

... researchers have warned against the use of the 'wonder drug' saying it could prove fatal for the COVID-19 patients. According to reports, researchers have also asserted that countries should lessen their reliance on HCQ as there was no scientific proof of its benefit in treating coronavirus. Meanwhile, coronavirus has infected 3,822,295 and killed 1,303,793 across the world,

M C Misra, former director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) while speaking to PTI said, "It is only on anecdotal evidence that doctors are using HCQ along with other antiviral medication (used in HIV and other viral infections) as empiric therapy to treat COVID-19 patients as there is no definite treatment available yet" ...

... India has become the leading exporter of HCQ ...

15. Hospitals in NYC have abandoned Hydroxychloroquine

... "We know now it probably doesn’t help much," said Dr. Thomas McGinn, Deputy Physician-In-Chief at Northwell Health. "We’re not recommending it as a baseline therapy anymore. It is only in a treatment protocol in a study that we’re recommending it."

Hospitals began using the drug early on in hopes it could calm the overactive immune response to COVID-19. But now that little proven benefit has been found, many doctors here in New York have moved on.

Just days ago, Mount Sinai changed course.

"As of last week, we stopped using hydroxychloroquine as a routine medication in our hospital based upon the cumulative experience in our hands and in others, and recommendations by the FDA that it should not be used outside of clinical trials,” said Dr. Charles Powell, chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the Mount Sinai Health System and CEO of the Mount Sinai-National Jewish Health Respiratory Institute ...

16. States weigh what to do with millions of malaria pills

The Strategic National Stockpile has shipped 28 million tablets of a malaria drug that President Donald Trump touted as a potential treatment for COVID-19 to states since April 1. States received millions more from donations or taxpayer-funded purchases.

But after doubts arose about whether the drug, hydroxychloroquine sulfate, is safe and effective for the coronavirus-based disease, states are donating supplies to patients who need them for other reasons, seeking refunds or weighing what to do with them.

As Trump encourages some states to lift shelter-at-home orders, states report that hydroxychloroquine, a linchpin of Trump’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, won't be used to prevent any resulting surge of illnesses and deaths because the drug may not work and has dangerous side effects.

17. Administration ignored warnings about use of hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19

A government scientist was ousted after the Trump administration ignored his dire warnings about COVID-19 and a malaria drug President Donald Trump was pushing for the coronavirus despite scant evidence it helped, according to a whistleblower complaint Tuesday.

Rick Bright, former director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, filed the complaint Tuesday with the Office of Special Counsel, a government agency responsible for whistleblower complaints.

He alleges he was reassigned to a lesser role because he resisted political pressure to allow widespread use of hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug favored by Trump. He said the Trump administration wanted to "flood" hot spots in New York and New Jersey with the drug.

Bright's complaint comes as the Trump administration faces criticism over its response to the pandemic, including testing and supplies of ventilators, masks and other equipment to try to stem the spread. To date, there have been nearly 1.2 million confirmed cases in the United States and more than 70,000 deaths ...

18. Dr. Trump killed one of our constituents

I work for an elected official. I've been eyeball deep working with residents impacted by COVID-19, whether for unemployment, health insurance, SBA and PPP loans. By the end of the day, I'm completely wrung out and exhausted but can hardly sleep.

But today took the cake. I got a call from an elderly woman who lost her husband to COVID-19 in late March. He was treated with hydroxychloroquine and azithromyicin without her knowledge, because she had COVID-19 also and was quarantined at home. She was furious because he had a- fib and she is convinced Dr. Trump killed her husband.
I am bereft and heartbroken for her and her husband.
This is just such a tragedy and now they are going to pretend it never even happened.
