Top House Republican: Let's ignore Trump's virus response and just investigate China

By Josh Israel -May 7, 2020 4:12 PM

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) doesn't think there needs to be any accountability for the administration when it comes to their coronavirus response.

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), the newly appointed ranking member of the House's Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, said Thursday that the panel should focus on investigating China.

The Minority Whip released a statement noting his "misgivings about Speaker Pelosi's intentions behind the creation of this select committee."

"Rather than letting this effort devolve into yet another political witch hunt, I am determined to focus the subcommittee's work on three important areas that Speaker Pelosi continues to overlook: holding China accountable for hiding the truth about the virus from the world, helping ensure the success of the largest relief effort in American history, and providing clear and immediate guidance on how to safely reopen our economy," Scalise said in the statement.

"We must stick to the facts and keep our subcommittee focused on what matters: restoring the physical and economic health of the American people so we can reestablish the strength and security of our great nation. I welcome Chairman Clyburn and the other Democrats on this committee to join us in this effort," he added.

Amirite? We all have some Republican operative assigned to investigate our every move. I would like to meet mine, ask how's it going, and give out some tips for better results.

Like President-For-Life Xi gives a crap...We should probably empty our own bioweapons locker before we try to point fingers. As it is, we lack proper leadership for this pandemic. Everyone is floundering.

I know! Let's investigate where Trump took our PPEs! That's more of interest right now, rather than this pathetic attempt to turn the Chinese into outcasts.

No, Trump, we are still not gonna vote for you. Better start packing.

HOWEVER, that did not stop South Korea and Taiwan, much closer to China and also heavily trading with China, from jumping on top of the situation and containing the virus before widespread problems, like we have here, developed.

Italy did what we did (actually we did what Italy did) and got smacked. Spain had a similar response and got smacked.

We can certainly be upset about China not being forthcoming earlier, however, it doesn't negate the absolute FACTS that Trump downplayed the virus for over a month while South Korea and Taiwan acted. It does not negate that FACT that OUR VERY OWN early warning system IN CHINA, was dismantled in 2018 by Trump. It doesn't negate the FACT that Trump had 3 goddamned years to improve our ability to respond to health crisis because he was specifically warned since 2017 that a pandemic was coming.

Epidemics and Pandemics are ALWAYS going to be out there and they will hit whether we want them to or not. The actual issue is HOW WE RESPOND not who to blame.
