Vegas Mayor Faces Recall After Offering City as Coronavirus 'Control Group'
On Wednesday, Polk visited the city clerk's office to file a notice of intent to circulate a recall petition. He must now collect 6,745 signatures from registered voters who took part in last year's municipal primary election by Aug. 4.
If he succeeds, the city would hold a mayoral recall election to let voters decide whether to remove Goodman.
"[Goodman has] failed to responsibly represent her constituency, not only in her clear disregard for public health, but also in her support for the casino owners over the people of Las Vegas," Polk said in a brief statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
"Additionally," he continued, "she is barely able to speak coherent sentences while discussing the subject matter. She is unfit to serve as the mayor of Las Vegas."
I hope they get the signatures needed.

(65,337 posts)I'm guessing (!) he was an OK mayor and she got elected on name recognition.
Strangely, I read she has an MA in counseling. I expected more empathy given her background.
When her husband was mayor, she made him mad because of nasty stuff she said about Obama. She later apologized to him personally.
She's term limited so she's done in 3 years anyway.

(42,770 posts)will be affected by the virus the most, and for the longest period of time, it's got to be Vegas.

He got mad at her, because while he ran as an I, he leaned D. When she trashed Obama, I read he was pretty mad & said so publicly.
Interestingly though, he was a lawyer who had a client you may have heard of. Tony Spilotro.
The Chicago mob enforcer in Vegas. The root of the Joe Pesci character in Casino.
So, there's some off odor around the family.

(14,552 posts)The recall may not be as easy as you'd think. Her husband was the previous mayor for 3 terms. They are a power couple. he made his money defending mobsters and she established their name in society.

(65,337 posts)It's why he stepped away.
I read he, like Blomberg, tried to change the city charter to allow a 4th term. Both of them failed in that effort.
She's in her 3rd term, so she's done in 2023. With 3 years to go, she might be vulnerable. If her term was up in November, I'd completely agree with you.
But, recalls are an uphill battle no matter the circumstances.

(14,552 posts)The city changed their elections to even numbered years.
I think part of the problem will be low voter turnout in her election
population of Vegas- 644,644 (2018)
voter turnout for mayoral race- 26,723
votes for Goodman 22,316 83.51%

(65,337 posts)Wow! One in 25 in the city.
What's that, 10% turn out?

(14,552 posts)to an even year. It will increase the turnout.

(65,337 posts)Still, a fourfold increase is still only 40-45%!
