Michigan State Police who work at the building regularly enforce the sign rule, but there is no rule or law preventing gun owners from carrying their weapons into the Capitol.
"It's always been on the books -- even before the last constitutional convention -- the right to open carry in Michigan," said Sgt. Jeffrey Held of the Michigan State Police. "Nobody's ever changed it."

(23,804 posts)LANSING, MI -- Attorney General Dana Nessel said Friday a ban on guns at the Capitol could be enacted by the Michigan State Capitol Commission, which is slated to discuss firearms next week.
In a letter sent to the Michigan State Capitol Commission, Nessel said the commission would be within its rights to ban guns on the Capitol grounds for the protection of those both inside and outside of the building. She also issued a statement on her decision in a press release issued by her office.
With exceptions to those tasked with protecting our Capitol, the only way to assure that a violent episode does not occur is to act in concert with the many other state legislatures around the nation that have banned firearms in their capital facilities," Nessel said.
"The employees at our Capitol and members of the public who visit are entitled to all the same protections as one would have at a courthouse and many other public venues. Public safety demands no less, and a lawmakers desire to speak freely without fear of violence requires action be taken.
~snip~
it should be noted that the second amendment does not apply here, IMO. banning guns from the capital grounds does not stop anyone from "baring" them. you may still own your weapon, you just can't bring it in that building. and let's face it, if the need to violently overthrow the state government arises, the "no guns at the capital" rules doesn't stop you from doing so. Picture an armed revolt stopping at the door when they see a no guns sign and saying" well, dammit, i guess we can't do anything because the sign says i can't take my gun inside!"
