Hurricane season is still weeks away but experts are already anticipating that this year could be more active than normal a forecast that emergency officials may find troubling as much of the country remains in the grips of the coronavirus pandemic.
The season officially begins June 1, but some meteorologists who have been tracking ocean and atmospheric dynamics over the past few months say conditions are ripe for storms.
"I'm sure nobody wants to hear this with everything else going on, but it's looking like it will be a relatively active season," said Phil Klotzbach, an atmospheric scientist at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
Klotzbach and his colleagues at Colorado State released a forecast in early April that predicts 16 named storms with winds of 39 miles per hour or higher. Of those, the researchers' models suggest eight could become hurricanes, including four "major" hurricanes that reach Category 3 or higher.

(5,810 posts)that were now just weeks away from a disaster season of a different kind. The psychological toll on all of us is enormous. But those of us who live in the zone know the drill. While assembling our hurricane stash, we still need to remain vigilant about the virus. Just because well be dealing with a weather related potential disaster does not mean we are finished with the pandemic. No, it just complicates the weather disaster.
I sincerely hope that planners for hurricanes are looking seriously at how shelters will be run in the event of an approaching storm. I hope that each person living in potential targets will think about the what ifs what if we need to go to a shelter? What if we lose our home in a storm and have no place to go? How can we safely remain sheltered at home? What do we need to shelter in place, assuming we are not near a storm surge.
All these things need to be decided ahead of time. Plan B, C and D need to be thought of in case Plan A fails. How will Covid -19 patients be handled in the event they need to be sheltered? My husband and I only evacuated for one storm. That was Camille in 1969 and that was because we lived near the water and had a 2 month old baby. All the rest weve stayed home and sheltered in place, including several direct hits, Frederic in 1979 and Ivan in 2004. So we know what to do. But weve never been through two disasters at the same time. I hope the powers that be are consulting with scientists and doctors to figure out a plan.
