US reversal prevents UN vote on pandemic truce

The United States on Friday stunned other members of the UN Security Council by preventing a vote on a resolution for a ceasefire in various conflicts around the world to help troubled nations better fight the coronavirus pandemic, diplomats said.

Washington's reversal came a day after it agreed to the text, negotiators said under cover of anonymity.

"The United States cannot support the current draft," the country's delegation declared, without further detail, to the 14 other Security Council members, after nearly two months of difficult negotiation over the text.

The latest stalemate continues to leave the global peace and security body largely mute in the face of a once-in-a-century pandemic that has killed more tha 270,000 people and raised further fears for the world's most vulnerable.

I never thought I would be horribly ashamed of my country.
Actually, I guess I am ashamed of my government. Not to adopt the asshole dictator's slogan, but we can make this country a force for good again.

The USA is becoming a liability to the rest of the World and an more aggressive monger of conflict. Peace? Oh, that's not even a notion, even in a global crisis. Talk about a malignant curse.

Those Americans better make some changes for everybody's sake. This looks bad.

Oh, wait...I am an American and live here. I almost forgot because I can't recognize the place anymore.

Nobody in the civilized world had anticipated that a president would emerge in the United States that would so thoroughly explode our notion of what we thought we had built as evolved countries in this world.

No rules. No laws. No decency. No cooperation. We never have codified some rules, laws and decency. But it looks like we're all (all of us in the whole world) going to have to re-think this.
