What a coincidence that having the same type of leader who downplays the danger leads to the same bad results.

(9,998 posts)Brazil will certainly be #1 in South America. And Mexico in Central America. I'm guessing Mexico is in pretty bad shape right now, and getting worse.

(35,280 posts)There's a reason San Marino can have 4x the US case rate and more than 3x the number of tests per 1 M population than the US does.
Still, San Marino has only 637 cases and 41 deaths as of when I'm writing this while the US has 1.3 million cases and 13.5k deaths.
Quick: You make US$30k/year. Poverty or no?
Answer: Impossible to answer. If you're single, certainly not poverty. If you're a single mother with 5 kids, you're in poverty. Same for population: If you're in Mexico, $30k US gets you a lot more than if you're in NYC.
Brazil should be #1 in S. America. The US should be in the top 5.
Countries that have managed to suppress the virus have a problem now: Their borders must remain absolutely closed and everybody entering must be tested and quarantined until there's a vaccine, a privilege bought at the risk of separating families for weeks and ignoring what we'd see as Constitutional protections for privacy. But if you don't quarantine everybody entering you could have large numbers of hotspots popping up randomly; don't seal the borders, and anybody that crosses could kill strangers by just being in a confined space with them for a while--a store, a bus, an office.

Maybe he calculated that having people die is less costly than trying to do something about it.
