Could a new type of ultraviolet lamp be used in stations, airplanes and schools to kill dangerous viruses, becoming a gamechanger in the COVID-19 fight?
Researchers at Columbia University have been working on such uses for years, and the current pandemic could confirm the value of their efforts.
UVC lamps have long been used to kill bacteria, viruses and molds, notably in hospitals and in the food-processing industry. As the coronavirus pandemic knocks world economies on their heels, this technology is experiencing a boom.
But UVC (for Ultraviolet-C) rays are dangerous, causing skin cancer and eye problems, and can be used only when no one is present.

Maybe Trump could stick one up his ass and see if it works.

(58,605 posts)but yean, that's the highest energy, most dangerous form of UV light and people can't take more than a few seconds of it, if that.
Workers have to wear full on protection when using those lights.

(10,122 posts)Low wattage UV bulbs are used in hospitals and appliances to disinfect.
Hospitals will also use larger UV lamps in rooms to disinfect them.
I put them in a Styrofoam box in our detached garage.
I calculated the joules/cm2 needed as laid out in the Stanford report on sterilizing masks to check the distance the bulbs needed to be at. Bulbs are on either side of the mask. I then beefed them up by using mirrors to make sure I got ample UV light (factor of safety) and to get around shadows.
They're on a timer for 60 minutes (double Stanford spec)
We also heat them at 180 degrees (167 is the spec) for 30 minutes.
That doubles what Stanford suggested.
So far, we haven't been sick ... and the masks show no sign of degradation.

(5,477 posts)there are special front-surface mirrors with specific coatings (and sometimes a quartz overlay) that are made to reflect UVC, but regular glass will not pass it through.

(10,122 posts)to sterilize without the mirrors in 30 minutes. I'm hitting them with 60
plus 30 minutes of heat.
Glass doesn't block all UV light.
But from your post, I see aluminum foil would be a better substitute.

(945 posts)Frankly, I've been hearing the promises of:
Remsidvier
Llama antibodies
Human antibodies
UV Light
I am soooo ready for these to be common remedies now and not lab tests. I know, I know...these things take time, but GEEZUS! Let's get a move on!
