What are the one or two products you just can't find, in stores or online?

For me, it’s disinfectant wipes, for cleaning or hands.

Haven’t seen them since the toilet paper rush. There’s a few other things, but since I mentioned one or twoin the title thread, it’s wipes.

We are seeing occasional supplies of disinfectant wipes here in SC but not at grocery stores. CVS and Walgreens have had some, usually one per customer.

The recipes generally suck. If I read one more Karen talk about "soft, fluffy, bread" - I am going to cry. Bread should be crusty and chewy with good gluten development.

Anyway, here is where I settled.

1 and 3/4 cups water
2 tsp salt
2 tbls olive oil
4 loose cups of all purpose flour
2.5 tsp (or one envelope) yeast

I put it all in about 7pm and set timer for 12 hours.

All that time helps flour hydrate and some gluten develop. I do a light crust as it's plenty.

Not because I am a sanitary freak but because it is effective and especially effective on ants (repellent or immediate death followed by tracing trail) plus other out of place insects. So usually have a container on kitchen counter, a bottle in office, and a bottle in bathroom and an extra or two in utility room

Live way out on National Forest inholding and have to travel for shopping; last three times in market / other retail were March 2, April 4, and May 4. Went to Safeway twice, Costco twice, Winco once, Ace twice, and Hupa Reservation market once and not a bottle of 409 to be found. Haven't tried to find online and no home delivery here.

Lack of and now running out of 409 is disconcerting just of my habit, a reminder of the trouble we share.

It should last me a couple years!

https://www.bakersauthority.com/collections/yeasts-leavening

I got the Red yeast.

From a web site on this particular yeast brand;

Saf-Instant® Red Yeast

USAGE:
Varies with application or intended use. As a starting point, replace active dry yeast with ¾ the amount of SAF-Instant® Yeast or 25 percent less for equivalent fermenting power. A moisture adjustment may be needed. SAF-Instant® Yeast will replace compressed yeast on an average at 33-40 percent of compressed yeast levels. When converting from compressed yeast, extra water is required to be added to the dough, approximately double the weight of the yeast.

Specifically formulated for:

Artisan
Bagels
Baguettes
Crackers
Croissants
Donuts
English Muffins
Flat Breads
Hearth Breads
Pan Breads
Pizza Crusts
Reduce mixing time by 10% - 30% and shorten rising time by up to 50%
Doesn't need to be dissolved in water prior to mixing, saving you time and money over active yeast Perfect for making delicious bagels, croissants, donuts, and more

If I keep checking them, thus far I've been able to get an order in before they are sold out again for most items. Sometimes I have to pay to ship, but at least I'm not having to go to multiple stores multiple times per week in the hopes of seeing what I need on the shelves. Oh, and that preorder pickup option? I can't tell you how many times I've had Safeway or King Soopers or Sam's club accept an order for pick up, only to have them call back or merely cancel the whole order right before I was due to pick up.

One can generally find TP, but not in the big volume packages. Hand sanitizer is quite a different thing. It does not seem to exist anymore. I make my own with 91% alcohol and aloe, but it is not comparable from a "gel" standpoint. Gets the job done when soap and water is not an option though.

Rubbing alcohol isn't available either, unless it's a huge amount from Amazon. (The last I checked.)

I already had rubbing alcohol, though, and made my own hand sanitizer by combining it with aloe (from Amazon).

I didn't add "fragrances" to it, so it obviously smells like the rubbing alcohol. Squirts out great from an old soft soap container that I found in a cabinet, which was almost empty anyway.

I use Walmart’s brand of glucose meter because the strips aren’t as exorbitantly expensive as the other brands.
