10. I changed patterns

I had been making the Olson pattern, which has a filter pocket, but this time I decided to use the pattern on Joann's site and made it three layers thick.

17. I'm not a great seamstress

I've found sewing to be very calming during this isolation thing. I don't think I do a good enough job to expect anyone to pay for any masks that I make, but I do think these came out well. Somebody who is more skilled than me could probably crank out quite a few in very little time.

I've made masks for family members and myself.

I'm not a seamstress by any stretch of the imagination, but I've found that sewing has been therapeutic for me. I've only been making masks and bowl cozies so far.

29. My brother, who sews, has been

making them out of leftover bandanas he had from years as Commander of his local American Legion. He learned from my mom who did seamstress work on the side to earn food money during lean years. She made our ties for years.

30. My mom was pretty good as a seamstress

She was pretty good at a lot of things, always self taught. I don't think she ever took any kind of music lessons, but she knew how to play piano and accordion, and I painfully listened to her teaching herself how to play the violin when I was a teenager. What she wasn't good at was being a teacher. She had no patience for us kids when it came to teaching us how to do things.

What I did learn from her was that if there was a will, there was a way, and that i could probably figure out how to do things I wanted or needed to do, so I guess that was a good thing. These days we have search engines, so it's a lot easier than the trial and error method.

My mom loved old musicals, and she used to even come and get me out of bed late at night to watch them with her. What an utterly insane thing to do. I mean, I was just a little kid, and probably even had school the next day. It's no wonder that I have crazy sleep habits to this day.

I don't recall seeing the film that featured this musical number, but maybe I did. I think I slept through a lot of them on the couch.
