Someone is "developing" a large field close to my Apartment complex.

I have learned that they’re going to build apartments there.

BTW, they are building apartments in any vacant lot around here. Apartments or condos or housing divisions. But I digress.

In upstate SC, the soil is a sticky red clay. Now in somebody’s yard where they’ve had grass and trees for ages that isn’t what you see. But most places all you see is a sticky red clay that most Americans would associate with Georgia. (BTW, Georgia has it too.)

Anyway, the builders have also moved tons of dirt from somewhere to that piece of land. It’s not a swamp or low spot. So anybody know why they would be doing that?

As clay soil gets wet, it holds on to water and becomes very soft. This soft soil can be weak, causing the home to shift (or “sink”) down into it. Poor Drainage: If water is allowed to stand, pool or “pond” next to your home, the soil will absorb the water.
