We live in NC.
I am sure everyone has seen the photos of those armed rednecks in Raleigh; and read about the KKK-like armed group led by a law enforcement officer to an African American household. (I write KKK-like because their robes hadn't been dry cleaned, or something. Anyway, they weren't wearing them)
What are these folks so angry about? Why do they hate liberals? We have been voting in their best interests for decades.
I know: racism (I am a Southerner, I get that), the NRA, and FOX news....but, there has to be something deeper going on here.
What is making these guys feel so disenfranchised?
Why is Trump always so mad? Every time you see him, he is pounding the podium, angry, yelling in that weird lisp, the anger tweets--- If I had inherited his wealth, at his age, I would be sitting in my condo thinking about my next museum tour of the world.
What is wrong with them?

(115,683 posts)because the anger it creates is exciting; it gets the adrenaline running. The actual target of the anger is less important than the enjoyment of the anger, so the target can be any "other" that the aggrieved person feels is persecuting him. This sense of victimhood arises from the fact that the "others" are asserting the same rights as the angry white guy, and, as the saying goes, if you're used to privilege, equality feels like oppression. So the "oppressed" people are angry because they see their white male privilege being eroded for the benefit of the non-white and non-male. And they enjoy being angry. Trump is feeding that anger whether he feels it personally or not (and he probably does) because it is politically advantageous to him.

(14,853 posts)... the anger of Rush Limbaugh back in the 80's during lunch breaks (when I first heard him in the radio).
It was like "The Jerry Springer Show" to them, I think. My impression at the time was that they didn't care about the ideas so much, but the right-wing ideas probably seeped into their brains too after awhile.
Lots of people seem to enjoy getting worked-up about football rivalries and all kinds of silly things.

(14,853 posts)This was years later at another job, and another factory.
I was working 13-hour night-shifts when 9/11 happened, ready to go to bed when I decided to turn on the TV. Saw the first Trade Center building on fire, and then the plane that hit the second one. Yadda, yadda, yadda... I never went to bed that day.
Showed up at work despite no sleep, still very angry about the day's events. To my surprise, almost nobody else seemed very upset! They acted more "excited" by it, like it was an interesting change in their lives. And everything was self-absorbed too, like, "You should buy gasoline now because the prices just keep going up! I filled up MY car already!"
By the time of my first break that night, Bill O'Reilly was on the TV (some employees always kept it on Fox News).
He was ranting about it, of course, and blaming Bill Clinton for what happened.
Anyway, what I found most interesting was that my coworkers suddenly acted angry about the day's events too! It was like they needed to see that kind of anger, and then they parroted it!
For me, my anger subsided substantially AFTER seeing O'Reilly. That's when I was thinking, "Okay, we all need to respond to this logically."

(15,536 posts)Absolutely spot on. They are the true class of people who have a sense of entitlement, not the people they are talking about when they talk about entitlements. They have been raised to believe that they are entitled to have the biggest slice of the pie just because they are white and male.

Tell them that their former slaves now enjoy equality under the law, and they go murderously berserk...

(6,930 posts)Checked out CA lately? Michigan? Minnesota? Massachusetts? These people are all over the Midwest, and even in the northwest. One of the most racist places I ever lived was upstate NY. You can find them in every damn state in this country. I could continue, but I know it makes no difference. Many of us have pointed this out, but people just love to hate on the south. Putting it all on one region is essentially burying your head in the sand. They are everyfuckingwhere.
Aristus
(66,328 posts)But yeah, I have a love-hate relationship with the South.
I hate the fact that I was raised on the myth of Robert E. Lee as the gentle, grandfatherly general who hated slavery but loved Virginia.
I hate the fact that I was nearly an adult before I realized that the defenders of the Alamo, legends of San Antonio, my hometown, weren't fighting for freedom; they were fighting to expand slavery into the West.
And I hate the fact that the South is a solid, unbroken band of red.
I will count the day that Texas, my home state, turns blue as one of the happiest in my life.
I have a brand-new colleague, an ultra-liberal, staunch advocate for the homeless, who was born and raised in South Carolina. He moved to the Northwest in order to escape, well, South Carolina. We've spent a lot of time bonding over our sad affection for the troubled region of our birth.
For all of the racist places in this racist country of ours, the South is still the place where that racism underwent the thickest, most-nearly impenetrable institutionalization.

(11,736 posts)Specifically by government getting in the way of their right to their rightful place in society. A bunch of elitist Liberals have tipped the playing field in favor of a bunch of weak women, lazy Black people, illegals (Mexican and Central Americans), and people with "strange lifestyles". You see, back then you didn't need a stinkin colleg degree to get a good job. You could raise kids with one job and your wife staying in the kitchen where she belongs. You could live in a decent (read segregated) neighborhood and own your house. Now because of welfare, affirmative action, and regulations; the economy is all messed up and you can't make ends meet.
So they are told all of the valid problems (no money, rising prices, lack of mobility and opportunity) but instead of talking about the real reasons (corporate welfare, greed, corruption, etc...) they are told it is "liberal policies" that are to blame.
It is easier to believe that people who are "not worthy" are being propped up in a conspiracy, than it is to accept that the wealthiest people and corporations (that you work for, buy your food and drink from, buy your car from, etc...) are rigging the system for their benefit and leaving you to fight with Black and Brown people for the scraps.

(4,395 posts)Why can't you get laid? There must be something wrong with women. It's not that you're self-involved and a bit lazy and don't smell great.
Why can't you get a good job? Someone else must be stealing it from you. It's not that you fucked around in high school or aren't that bright academically or are inflexible about where you live or are insubordinate to your bosses or lack customer service skills.
Why can't you get good health care? The liberals keep trying to socialise it. Not you can't be bothered to learn how it all works so you can vote for someone whose position actually reflects your interest.
And on and on.
Combine poor critical thinking skills with a lack of introspection and you get enraged entitlement.

Pure, ugly, unabated hate. It fills their little black hearts and fuels their daily dithering. It has consumed them and they know nothing else. Anyone who doesn't exude the hatred they do, doesn't/can't get it. Those of us who are normal, cannot conceive of this kind of dark murderous emotion.
As a Catholic child, I was taught that hatred was too strong an emotion for mankind to handle, and thus no one should ever hate anyone. It was an all-consuming disease that destroyed the human spirit, snuffed out the soul. "Never say you hate some one." I believed that it was a mortal sin to hate anyone. As I grew older, I could see, first hand, the damage that hate visited upon people. It warped them.
