(6,377 posts)Id bet that this election was a pretty extraordinary circumstance. Run this election without COVID19 to push down turnout, or at a time when it isnt only 6 months away from the seat being up again, and it would be a different story.

(4,845 posts)I don't understand why everyone seems to think we will keep all the gains we had in 2018. I understand we are still in the "resist mode" under Trump and that should theoretically boost our turn-out. However, we turned a lot of right leaning counties (including this one) blue in 2018 and those are outliers rather than norms. Those districts aren't suddenly going to be consistently blue.
That also leaves out the strength/weakness of our candidate and theirs. It looks like they have the racial and other profile that fits CA-25. Similar to Obama's race attracts a lot of blacks and minorities to vote for him (not saying they don't agree with his politics, but you can't discount that some voted blue to see a black/minority president even if they are republicans/independents).
I am sure we will see similar "sad" post when Doug Jones loses the Alabama seat in Nov while any reasonable being would know he is close to a lost clause. I do hope he will keep his seat but I am realistic about his chances.

(43,465 posts)If Mike Garcia's lead over Christy Smith holds, he'll become the only House Republican from a district Hillary Clinton won with more than 50% of the vote.

(52,166 posts)they got a ballot mailed to them, with postage paid return. All those lazy ass voters had to do was fill it out. put in the envelope and put the envelope in the mail. It isn't like this election was important or anything. At some point we have to call lazy ass voters lazy ass voters. These are adults for the love of God.

(4,613 posts)there is no mail delivery/pick-up and you have to go to the small post offices there to both retrieve and send your mail. So it isn't as easy as just putting it out for the postman to pick-up and perhaps even getting out to do this was more of a risk than some people wanted to take.

(52,166 posts)I find that rather difficult to believe.

(4,613 posts)if they don't feel comfortable leaving the house. I have a friend who lives in one of these communities who has very serious kidney disease. I guarantee you that she is not leaving the house much, if at all, these days.

(52,166 posts)but the turnout on our side was way worse than such numbers would be responsible for.

(5,559 posts)It was republican held continuously from 1992 to 2018.
It was a stretch and a remarkable flip in 2018. There is also the baggage / backlash of the Democratic office holder having resigned after a scandal

(6,801 posts)Would seem to be some sort of backlash about Katie Hill and her icky scandal. My anger is directed toward her and her cavalier attitude toward winning an election in a red district. Losing CA-25 does not surprise me.

(8,086 posts)By November her "scandal" would have been a blip, and inconsequential in the coming blue tsunami.
Why oh why do we insist on surrendering what few levers of power we hold?

(5,559 posts)nice to see the big blue sea can reach up that far, but unreasonable to expect to crest that high every cycle thereafter.
dropping the ocean metaphors, it also matters that the Republicans ran someone very well suited to the district. Places like CA 25 are where we do need blue dog types. I know we like to dish on Manchin, Tester, and the other handful of blue dogs left, but we're better off overall with them in these seats than a true rightwinger.

(6,022 posts)will bring out more blue voters... at least I hope so. There is way too much trash in my district.

(4,238 posts)Don't fuck your staffers, even if consensual. Thanks for nothing, Katie.
People are acting like this didn't happen or it did not play a role. This is a red district. Those crossover voters, who probably voted Democratic first in their lifetime, probably felt they got screwed after the scandal. I believe, disappointment and regret played in the Republican's favor.
