Trump's "Base" Is Made up of Deliberately Ignorant People

They're the ones who turned out on Mother's Day to pack a restaurant in Colorado, exposing their Moms to COVID-19.

The rest of the population in that town stayed home.

They're the ones who took guns to a protest in Michigan to intimidate lawmakers and get their pictures on the news.

The rest of the population stayed home.

They're the ones attacking store personnel who are bold enough to tell them to "mask up."

The rest of us wear masks when we have to go to a store.

Trump's "base" is sure it won't get the virus. Why? Because Trump is minimizing the threat, and they want to believe him. Otherwise, they'd be worried and have to stay at home like the rest of us.

That deliberate ignorance and defiant behavior will expose more of them to the virus.

The rest of us will stay home.

Their actions in our eyes, in our fact-based eyes, are ignorant, true. But I live amongst these people in rural Georgia, and many of them are not ignorant at all. They've simply been conditioned to believe their sources of information without question and, conversely, to doubt and disparage any information that contradicts their news sources. As Bill Maher put it, they live in a bubble, and they take great pleasure in knowing how much it pisses off people like us.

Everything is a game to them, or at least it will be until they all kill themselves off because of their senseless shenanigans. Too bad they'll probably take us down with them and never realize it was all their fault.

8. I don't know that it's so much willful ignorance

as arrogant ignorance. I've known and worked with people who refuse to admit they don't know about stuff and refuse to find out. And, not being a shrink, I think it's because they don't have enough self-confidence that they have to wear a mask. What used to be called an inferiority complex.
