Grocery prices showed their biggest monthly increase in nearly 50 years last month, led by rising prices for meat and eggs, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday.

U.S. consumers paid 4.3% more in April for meats, poultry, fish and eggs, 1.5% more for fruits and vegetables, and 2.9% more for cereals and bakery products, the Labor Department said.

Overall, consumers paid 2.6% more in April for groceries, the largest one-month jump since February 1974.

The jump in food prices came in a month when more than 20 million Americans lost their jobs, driving one in five households into food insecurity.

Before Covid 19 they were competitive with Wal-Mart on most of the stuff I buy, but no more. I paid $3.96 for 32oz bag of white rice at WM, and the same size pkg at Amazon was $32 from an unknown 3rd party seller.

Talk about price gouging!

Not surprising either due to the CV outbreaks in processing plants.

A 1 pound package of ground beef was $10.00 last Saturday at my market. I passed it up.

I wonder why? If asked what would the answer be on why the prices went up? Just in time with the Covid issue...……...Might they be taking advantage?

That's the beauty of capitalism. Make people desperate for something and then overcharge them for it. Price gouging is as old as time itself. The oil industry has been using it for decades.

It's good for the planet and supports your neighbors.

It's healthier as well.

A few weeks ago chicken was pretty high. This week hamburger meat jumped up and chicken went down.
