The Senate was just one vote short of adopting an amendment that would have required a search warrant for the government to conduct secret surveillance of internet users search and web browsing data.
The vote 59-37 vote Wednesday, with 60 needed to adopt the amendment, was a defeat for privacy advocates.
The amendment to require warrants was sponsored by Republican Senator Steve Daines of Montana and Democrat Ron Wyden of Oregon. It would have limited the authority under Section 215 of the Patriot Act, which allowed the government to access a variety of records in national security investigations.
The American people will not tolerate warrantless government spying, Wyden said Wednesday on the Senate floor.
If you want to see an Americans search history, then you better go to a judge and get a warrant, Daines said.
Independent Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Democrat Patty Murray of Washington did not vote. Murray was flying back to Washington on Wednesday.

(3,145 posts)I'm more interested in that reasoning than why Bernie skipped a vote.

(1,609 posts)Murray was in flight. Bernie misses a lot of votes and has missed a lot in the last 5 years or almost the whole time he has been a Senator. I'm really disappointed in Feinstein also.

(16,685 posts)And post a new one reframing it as a concern about the 10 Democratic senators that actually voted AGAINST the amendment? I'm certain you don't intend to cause division when we need unity at the end of a contentious primary.

This really sucks.
Where was the effort to protect citizens rights, with the missing Sens?
Thanks for dropping the ball when we needed you to protect our Privacy Rights.
Where were they?

(3,696 posts)I bet that if Murray and Bernie had voted a couple more Republicans would have changed their vote. McTurtle knows exactly what the outcome will be before the first vote is cast.
