FLIPPABLE: Helen Price Johnson for WA-SD10

Helen Price Johnson grew up on Whidbey Island, graduated from Langley High School and earned her degree from Mills College in Administration and Legal Processes. She and her husband, Dave, raised their four children on Whidbey Island, and she is a third-generation small business owner on the island.

Helen has spent her adult life in service to her community, and she was recognized for this service by being named a “Hometown Hero” by the South Whidbey Record in 2004. As a twice-elected Board Member of the South Whidbey School District – from 2001 through 2008 – she represented the board on legislative issues at the state and federal level, and served for four years as board liaison to the Community Engagement Team for South Whidbey Schools. In 2007, the South Whidbey School Board earned the distinction of being named a Washington State School Board of the Year.

In 2008, Helen made history by becoming the first woman elected to the Board of Island County Commissioners. She has prioritized the protection of our islands’ natural resources and quality of life for our islands, and she has supported a vibrant economy and affordable housing for our families.

Helen serves on the Board of Directors of the Whidbey Community Foundation, and has been a longtime community volunteer with the South Whidbey PTA, the League of Women Voters, the South Whidbey Home Builders Association, the South Whidbey Historical Society, and South Whidbey Youth Soccer. The Langley Middle School PTSA gave her their highest honor, a Golden Acorn Award, in 1999. She is a member of the Clinton Community Club, Civility First, and a board member of the Mobile Turkey Unit. She served for 20 years as a Youth Leader at Langley United Methodist Church.

Helen is the past president of the Washington State Association of Counties. She has worked with Republican and Democratic county commissioners from across the state to address local government concerns, and will continue to work to support local communities and local government as a member of the Washington State Senate.
