FLIPPABLE: Ann Marie Mitchell for PA-HD178

Ann Marie grew up in a largely working-class community where her parents embraced the American dream. Ann’s father survived post-WWII Ukraine and Germany and arrived in the United States as a teenager with his mother, young sister and stepfather. When her abusive step-grandfather abandoned the family, Ann’s grandmother cleaned hotels in New York City as the sole support for her family so her son could attend city college. Ann’s father became a union member and as a teacher rose to be the science chairman of a local public school district. Ann’s mother is a 2nd generation Italian-American whose father supported their family as a union master electrician and eventually became the sole proprietor of his own electrical business. A graduate of Bishop McDonald Memorial High School in Brooklyn, Ann’s mom left college when she married. Because a teacher’s salary at the time wasn’t enough to provide for her family when Ann was a teen, she went to work as a bookkeeper to help the family make ends meet. Always hardworking, after enduring domestic violence, Ann’s mother graduated from college at 50 years old. As the daughter (and granddaughter) of WWII survivors and a victim of domestic violence, Ann Marie knows firsthand the impact lasting trauma has on multiple generations of families.

Growing up Ann Marie was taught that to survive everyone had to do their part. As a result, Ann Marie excelled academically, got involved in her community both as a girl scout and a candy striper, and held steady employment from the age of 14. Ann looked to her mother as a shining example of a dedicated community member, who was president of the local PTA Council, an active member of the hospital auxiliary, and later became a Roman Catholic Eucharistic minister — a role she still serves in today at St. Mary’s Hospital here in Bucks County, PA.

After attending public high school, Ann Marie became the first woman in her family to graduate from college and the first person in her family to graduate from law school. Her hard work and dedication early in her scholastic career earned Ann Marie a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated from the Wharton School of Business with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and a concentration in Finance. Later Ann Marie earned her Juris Doctorate from The University of Pennsylvania Law School. As someone whose hard work and grit helped her succeed, Ann Marie knows just how important access to affordable education and good-paying jobs with benefits are to break the cycle of generational poverty in our communities.

Both graduates of Pennsylvania universities, Ann Marie and her husband Don have made Northampton Township, Bucks County their home for the past 20 years. They are also proud parents of two Council Rock public school graduates, who now attend Temple University and Barnard College. Preserving the family legacy of civil service, both Ann Marie’s children also served as active animal rescue volunteers, which inspired the family to adopt 5 cats, 3 of which were rescued from Bucks County rescues.

Ann Marie’s over 25 years of experience in law and business have made her a strong negotiator with a clear understanding of how to build consensus, get people on both sides of an issue to work together and get things done. We can no longer afford to have individuals holding public office who are standing by and voting along party lines with no real perspective on how the law is impacting our communities. Ann Marie is an experienced business attorney who has the courage to stand up and give our district a voice in Harrisburg.
