New Coronavirus Vaccine Czar Says Finding One by January Is a 'Credible' Goal

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/15/us/politics/coronavirus-vaccine-timeline.html

Moncef Slaoui, a former pharmaceutical executive the White House chose to lead a crash development program, acknowledged that the 12-18 month timeline cited by Dr. Anthony Fauci was already “very aggressive.”

“Frankly, 12-18 months is already a very aggressive timeline,” said Moncef Slaoui, who is leading the government effort to develop a vaccine.

The former pharmaceutical executive picked this week to lead a crash program to develop a coronavirus vaccine said Thursday that developing and mass-producing a successful vaccine by January 2021 is a “credible objective,” but acknowledged it would be difficult.

Moncef Slaoui, a former chairman of vaccines at GlaxoSmithKline, who is heading the program, conceded in an interview that even the time frame repeatedly cited by Dr. Anthony S. Fauci as necessary for developing the vaccine, which President Trump has rejected, would still outpace what many scientists believe is possible.

“Frankly, 12-18 months is already a very aggressive timeline,” Mr. Slaoui said. “I don’t think Dr. Fauci was wrong.”

But Mr. Slaoui said he was undaunted by the president’s goal.

“I would not have committed unless I thought it was achievable,” Mr. Slaoui said, adding that he told the president that when he met with him for the first time on Wednesday at the White House and Mr. Trump asked if the goal was realistic.

Or anything he will forced out prematurely which is likely unsafe. I don't believe it would be safe from trump. No thanks. He's corrupted everything else so I don't believe him or any claims or vaccines he backs. I'd never trust anything trumps involved with.

There have never been successful vaccines developed for any forms of coronavirus.

milder coronaviruses are one of the most prevalent causes of the common cold

These things mutate a lot, a chickenpox style one and done vaccine may very well not be possible.

If someone draws a smiley face on their fist, it will still hurt when they punch me.

The public needs to start to mentally prepare for the worst case.

Staying shut down until a working vaccine is developed isn't a viable option.

Opening everything up and pretending everything is fine isn't a viable option either.

There is no happy ending to be had here.

Life and nature have served up a real shit sandwich for humanity. The only question is if its burger sized or a giant six foot shit hoagie.
