1. The local tribe, S'Klallam

means "strong people." The name comes from a gathering of tribes and feast. They had a contest to see which tribe was the strongest. They had to place a log on the top of a longhouse they were building. The tribes picked their strongest to pick up the log and place it but none could pick up the log.
When it was the S'Klallam tribes turn, their strongest men rolled the log into the water where it floated and they walked into the water until it was shoulder high. They then got the log onto their shoulders and walked out of the water to the building where they raised the log to the top of the longhouse. From then on, they were known as the strong (and smart) people.
