"South Pacific" movie: one of my all-time favorites

Over the weekend, my BBC2 channel (available via my cable subscription) showed the movie, "South Pacific." The movie was based on the Rogers and Hammerstein Broadway musical of the same name, which was loosely based on James Michener's short-story collection "Tales of the South Pacific." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Pacific_(1958_film)

"South Pacific" has always been one of my all-time favorite movie musicals. There was a time where I knew the words to literally every song. I was surprised by how many I still remember after umpteen years. I saw the movie when it was first released, loved it, and never miss a chance to watch it again when I can.

One of my favorite songs from the musical has always been "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught." If ever there were a time when one should remember this song, it is today. Here's the relevant clip from the movie:

Here are the lyrics:

You've got to be taught to hate and fear
You've got to be taught from year to year
Its got to be drummed in your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made
And people whose skin is a different shade
You've got to be carefully taught

You've got to be taught before it's too late
Before you are six or seven or eight
To hate all the people your relatives hate
You've got to be carefully taught

You've got to be carefully taught

Dad would buy the LPs with the sound tracks of all these musicals and play them on Sundays so my siblings and I can sing every line of every song from them.

on New Year's Eve of 1980 when my two young sons stayed up to welcome in the New Year and watched it with me!

They loved it too!

And yes, I still have many of those LP sound tracks.

I love "South Pacific" and so many of the old musicals. I find myself watching them these quarantine days just to make life a bit more comforting. I grew up on watching musicals with my mother and like you, I still know so many of the old songs. My father was a musician and my mother liked watching late night movies. There was always music in my home - music and books - and to this day I find comfort in both.

Also, wasn't Mitzi Gaynor just the cutest?
