The U.S. coronavirus death toll has topped 90,000, according to NBC News' count. Meanwhile, 1.5 million cases have been confirmed in the country.
Nearly 2,000 people died in the U.S. on Sunday alone, the tally showed. Globally, 315,000 have died from the virus, according to Johns Hopkins University data. Two of President Donald Trump's top officials are now pointing the finger at the administration's own scientists and Americans' pre-existing health conditions to explain the country's world-leading Covid-19 death toll.
Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar suggested Sunday that underlying health conditions, including among minorities, were one reason for the high American death toll -- nearly 90,000 as of Sunday evening. And Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro added the government's own Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to its list of scapegoats alongside China and the Obama administration.
The White House has been escalating its effort to recast the narrative of its own chaotic response to the crisis as it aggressively pushes to reopen the country ...

The number of coronavirus deaths could surpass 100,000 by June 1, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.
The 12 forecasting models in the United States tracked by the CDC are predicting an increase in deaths in the coming weeks and this grim milestone, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield tweeted.
As of Friday, more than 1.4 million people in the US have been infected with the coronavirus, and more than 87,000 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Earlier this week, a model by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington forecast 147,000 deaths in the US by August 4 ...

(12,286 posts)I am keeping a spreadsheet to track these numbers
April 1st USA had 188,247 infected and 3921 deaths.
May 1st USA had 1,095,304 infected and 63,871 deaths.
May 18th USA had 1,527,664 infected and 90,978 deaths (as of this morning).
We will be about 115,000 deaths by June 1st.
Assuming we have roughly 50,000 deaths per month steady with no run away exponential growth.
July 1 165,000 dead
Aug 1 215,000 dead
Sept 1 265,000 dead
Oct 1 315,000 dead
Nov 1 365,000 dead.
And that is a conservative estimate.

(95 posts)The bottom line is, these people simply do not care. They do not believe the numbers. My ex wife is a complete Trump worshipper as is her whole family. They feel every aspect of this event has been a hoax. Hospitals were never full. Tons of vacant hospital beds throughout all of this. People who actually died did not die of a virus. This is what they believe wholeheartedly. Nothing we say or show them will sway them. All it does is make them hunker down with their Trump worship more and more.
I know many, many Trump supporters. This Covid-19 situation has to a person, made them support Trump even more. I know of not a single Trump supporter who has now changed their opinion even slightly, except to the degree of more support for Trump and Republicans in general. This is mind boggling to a degree, but quite typical behavior of sycophants. And it stems from their deep-seeded hatred for Democrats and the Democratic party on the surface. Naturally, there are deeper psychological issues with these people, but I do not want to get into that. Suffice to say, if the election were held today, it is my belief that Trump would be reelected. It's that bad.

There's more of them than I have ever imagined. That is the astonishing thing to me.
