1. Courses In IL Opened On May 1

No carts. But the public health officials have declared carts safe as of the 28th, provided they're kept clean between uses & one person per cart.
I've been playing, walking.
But, with MS for 25 years, I struggle after a dozen holes, especially now with the soft turf from the 8+ inches of rain, so far in May.
I can get a cart anyway on a medical exception, but I've avoided it because I don't want the folks working to have to deal with "Why does that guy get one?" issues.
One could not tell just by looking at me, that I've got MS. Especially if they see me play, because I'm fairly good.
But, when it's ok'd by the state, I'm back to riding. One week from now.

6. Six

I've lost considerable distance over the last 15 years. 265 to 220.
The course I play has a rating of 69.2. My average score is 75.3. So, 6.1 above the rating.
I played 12 holes today. 9 pars, 3 bogeys.
Doing the handicap according to the actual formula, my average (10 best of last 20 scores) would have me at 5.8*0.96, or about 5.6.
But I don't post my scores with CDGA so I don't have an "official handicap".
In 1998, when I was playing competitively, I was a plus 2. But, that put me in championship flights, so I never won any events. A couple top 5s was my peak.
I don't hit far anymore, but I hit it straight & have a good short game.
Good luck on your upcoming rounds.

10. I hate you

Currently 13.1, was a 10.7 eighteen months ago. I just want to get down to single digits! (And yes 9.9 counts as single digits)

14. Sorry

But, you have to admit, I did get asked!
Want a quick way to get that extra stroke.
It isn't what they teach in golf mag videos.
Guaranteed to shave one full stroke.
PM me for my free advice.

4. Open in FL

...for the last couple of weeks.
Single riders only in carts, no flag stick touching needed, carts are being sanitized - which is being wiped down by someone with a filthy towel - or you can walk with a pull cart.
Actually, I did play and found it - the filthy towel part notwithstanding - relatively safe next to a lot of other open activities.
Course courtesies like shaking hands, high fives, or picking up someone's ball and/or club is verboten. But it was nice to get out a bit.

8. The trick to safety: land your drive at least six feet from the center of the fairway.

I land mine at least six feet off the fairway. Very safe.

I haven't played in months. Last time I played, I drove one ball at a pond, and it bounced off the ice. That's a way to get some great winter yardage. Of course, I claimed that I planned to do that.

9. The courses down in Orange County opened a few weeks ago

Not many changes. You either walk or have a single cart. No rakes in the sand trap, we go out first thing in the morning so didn't really notice any difference there, you just smooth out the divot with your shoes. Courses have done some modifications to the cup. Some have out an insert in so the ball only drops a couple inches down. Worked out well two weeks ago for me, won a skin when a guy putted a bit to fast, rolled in and bounced out due to the insert. The course we played last week had inserts attached to the flag with a little metal piece so you could use your putter head to lift up the insert and your ball would roll on the green. (We had to keep warning one buddy to not lean over and lift the lever with his hand.) And that contraption caused me a skin last week. Had a putt rolling on the edge of the hole, was getting ready to drop when it hit the lever and bounced out for me. Payback sucks!

All and all not bad, seems like courses are doing better spacing of tee times so we almost never on the same hole with another foursome. I think the courses moved from seven to eight minutes between foursomes to twelve to fifteen minutes between foursomes. For the most part we play fast, but is sure is much more enjoyable to have the huge gaps. We are giving one buddy grief because it is like a cross country trip and stopping at every scenic overlook. He is taking a half dozen pictures a round because of the larger gaps. I must say, I have noticed I am spending much more time looking at wildflowers and the hills.

Have a great day out there.

12. Hey, busterbrown! My wife and I played today, too!

We played the resort course at Villa Roma in Sullivan County, NY. It was a glorious sunny day with temperatures in the mid-70s. The course was in pristine condition and the greens were nearly perfect.

The Covid-preventative features were:

- Face masks required in the clubhouse; no more than four people at a time in the pro shop.
- Carts are disinfected after each use; one to a cart unless the golfers live together.
- Flagsticks remain in the holes; there are foam rings in the bottom of the cup so the ball doesn't drop all the way in. This was way better than when I played in Virginia last week where the foam filled the hole and all you had to do was hit it with the ball.
- No rakes in the sand bunkers; no ball washers; no water coolers on the course.
- Restrooms were open but wear your mask.
- The restaurant was closed but the pro shop had beer, sodas, juices and snack food; the course has lifted its "no coolers" policy.

Once we teed off, it felt like a normal day. Although my wife is a beginner (bless her!), I'm addicted to the sport and I had a pretty good round playing from the blue tees measured at 6120 yards. The course is located in the Lower Catskills so it's quite mountainous with lots of elevation changes. The views are spectacular!

Although there were other players on the course, we were comfortably surrounded most of the day by at least a hole on either side of us. This was good for my wife because she gets flustered if she feels were holding up the course. Since there were two foursomes ahead of us and two behind us, there wasn't much of a backup during our 3-1/2 hour round.

Golf is probably one of the safest sports in regards to social distancing. It is a magnificent feeling to be out on the course again!
