Virginia Gov. McDonnell (R) just forced state health board to shut down ALL abortion clinics!
by BruinKid

Rachel Maddow just reported on this. Under pressure from Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell (R) and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R), the state Board of Health reversed their prior ruling and applied a new trap law designed to shut down every single abortion clinic in the entire state.

Under pressure from Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, the Virginia Board of Health voted on Friday to pass a set of building regulations that could force many abortion clinics in the state to shut down.

Opponents of the regulations, which include minimum hallway widths, specific ventilation systems and covered entrances, argue that they are medically unnecessary and meant for the construction of new hospitals -- not as regulations for existing outpatient abortion clinics. None of the 20 clinics in the state that are applying for a new license currently meet the requirements, and in order to come into compliance in the allotted two-year time period they would have to undergo costly, extensive renovations.

The board voted to pass the regulations in June along with an amendment that would have grandfathered in existing clinics. But Cuccinelli refused to certify the version the board passed and told members that adopting such an amendment was outside their scope of power. He said the legislation that directed the board to regulate abortion clinics as hospitals, sponsored by Del. Kathy Byron (R-Lynchburg), did not intend for existing clinics to be exempt. The legislation called for the board to pass regulations on building specifics.

of young people regarding something as personal as reproductive rights and privacy. It seems like so many don't even care that grumpy old men are telling them what they can and can't have.

I am past my reproductive years, but I care what happens to my friends' daughters and sons' girlfriends. But if they aren't willing to show up for the fight, then why should care any more?

Maybe I'm wrong, but it feels like it is the more mature women leading this fight. I don't see many youth, including men, supporting the cause publicly. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

for 18 to 21 years, they'll learn to be concerned. It's all fun and games until an actual living human being is born and requires food, shelter, clothing, health care, education, etc. When Family Court judges start putting selfish immature slackers in jail until they pay, things might change.
Oh, and for you young women who pop these poor babies out--get a clue. A child is a life long commitment. Do you really think that boy friend you slept with for a few weeks is going to be there for you forever? Puhleeze. At least you can try to pretend you're not stupid and desperate. Do not inflict the results of your bad judgment on innocent babies.

my dad did. Now I know why. He fought for me and many others. And now its my time to continue the fight. I talk to young people all the time, I think they know what is going on. They don't want another war nor the government telling them (old white guys) that females don't have the right to their own bodies.

What old paranoid white old men are afraid is the white race in America becoming less powerful. It has nothing to do with white m babies nor making more white babies because in reality, that department is ok.

I took a US Govt course. It was me, a woman about my age, and a bunch of teenagers, half of them female. When we got to Roe v Wade, the professor asked us who agree with the decision. Me and the lady were the only ones who had our hands up. He shook his head and proceeded to give a great lecture on it. Not sure if it did any good.

Take a dental clinic to court and sue for it to be shut down under this legislation. See if you can't find a bona fide hospital or 2 that fail to meet the new standard, get orders closing them too.

Republicans pushing this sort of BS rely on chipping away at and wearing down resistance with repeated assaults. They're the two year old who has learned that if they scream long and loud enough, they can get a parent to punish an older sibling and reward them for their misbehaviour.

That women who live in states that still have services that allow women the right to have power over their own lives and bodies, pool our money, and send bus/train/airline tickets, or money for gas for the cars of women who live in these asshole states, to just LEAVE.

That's right, just leave, relocate to states that treat the rights of women with respect. It would be perfect justice if these horrid wannabe American Taliban states ended up without any women at all!

I really cannot believe we have to fight this battle all over again.

I want JUSTICE for women! Down with patriarchy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why the hell do you think so many churches and right wingers push adoption over abortion?? Do you know how much money they make adopting out new babies??? They have a major awards thing every year, and tons of non-profits designed to enable the adoption industries "curating" of fresh babies for rich couples. That's the little secret about the "pro-lifers" that most people don't get.

Babies who are curated for adoption are not "unwanted" babies, the idea is marketed to young women as opposed to abortion, so that the agencies can charge tens of thousands for the baby, plus the lawyers involved, etc. And they want to be sure that they have a fresh supply.

It's simply about the population in general.

A larger labor pool than jobs available helps them keep labor costs lower.

They also want to end every social program helping that labor pool. Quite literally they want us to work to death with no safety net, no health care, and no retirement. We must breed new stock for them before we fall over and die though.

Women in these United States are under siege by really intolerant people. Personally I would and will not spend a dime in Virginia. Thomas Jefferson who was one of the greatest Americans surely would be angry that his State is so out of touch with reality.

The right to reproductive rights is surely being infringed upon by some very ugly people.

The GOP has probably lost an extremely huge swath of voting age women and for obviously good reasons. Also the United States Supreme Court ruled on this issue a long time ago and it is Constitutional Law.

What should happen in States that pass such abominable laws is that any funding from the United States be halted

One only has to look at what happened in Florida in 2005 when Jeb was Governor, GW Bush President and republicans controlled the Florida House and Senate and the US House and Senate. The assaults on women's rights and individual rights were constant. How soon do people forget, in particular those that sat out the 2010 elections because they were upset that Obama didn't risk it all for Single Payer Health Insurance in the face of scorching resistance.

I was not as foolish, I helped re-elect Deval Patrick in Massachusetts. After seeing the carnage in the rest of the country, I shudder to think what my state would be facing with a republican Governor and AG, both were real possibilities. When we get rid of the everyman poser, Scott Brown, we will be deep blue once again, not to mention being the best performing state in the in regard to education, jobs, personal wealth and earnings, health and health care and any other indicator of well being.
