(31,261 posts)If you noticed President Obama when he was asked a question, there was ALWAYS a pause from him before answering. Joe should take on the same practice, he has beautifully overcome stuttering, the practice of contemplating an answer should be a chip shot for him.
I don't know about the guy that asked him the question, instead of a MAGAT, I thought the guy was a pretty hardcore Bernie Bro.

(34,857 posts)Where he was less articulate than he should have been. I remember the GOP effectively running in 2012 on his 'You Didn't Build That' remark, which was a gaffe - or his backhanded remark to Hillary being likable enough, which kind of re-energized her campaign in NH.
Yes. Obama was more disciplined, and Biden certainly has had more gaffes to his name. But in some ways, those gaffes are what endear people to Biden. The fact he isn't polished is a selling point for many.

(95 posts)We all love Obama, and I certainly do. Obama is AWESOME, and I miss him SO much. But EVERYONE says some things that could have been said better. As I remember, Obama had to explain, clarify, and essentially apologize for those remarks. In an effort to make fun of himself, he also once compared himself to people in the "Special Olympics." He had to apologize for that one.
Candidates need to think and be measured and calibrated in what they say. But at the same time, EVERYONE says something the wrong way sometimes.
We MUST not expect ANY human being nor any politician to be perfect in every syllable they uttter. I want Biden to also be authentic and HUMAN, not some impossibly perfect robot.
I listened to every bit of the interview. It was a good interview, sometimes a bit animated and energetic, but it was a radio show.
At one point Biden almost said "Kick his ASS" and he stopped himself, and the host said that was ok and he WANTED him to say that.
What Biden said at the end of the interview was clearly intended as an animated, jestful, "wiseguy" type remark in a RADIO interview, but also with a real point. His meaning was clear, and, if you watch it, the host (Charlamagne tha God) did not even blink an eye. This has to be taken in context, and he knew just what Biden meant: ---- If you compare me and Trump and look at our records, in a heartbeat you know that I am the better candidate for you and your community. --- And right afterward he said he would return to the show and also talked about some key points of his record and being supported for so long by the African American community. He said, "Just look at my record." I agree Biden did not say it just right. In fact, how I just said it is what he should have said. But his meaning was clear, and he was trying to be jestful and animated on a radio program. Context context context.

(3,635 posts)to help insulate him from his gaffes and tone-deafness about women and PoC, which come on a regular basis.
As a man of color I actually agree with what Joe was trying to say - but it can't come from a white man, but from a person of color.
Any PoC who votes for Trump is a self-hating Uncle Tom - most PoC feel this (including many conservative PoC, who may vote for a 'regular' Repub but not the outwardly white nationalist Trump).
Joe needs to get better at this or he's going to have issues with younger PoC.
He also needs Kamala on the ticket - who is spunky and will shield him from his gaffes.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)I don't think that Biden is tone deaf to POC. I actually see him as being very comfortable with Black people, in particular, that may have been at the base of his gaffe. As a Black person, I often wonder why in hell a Black person would ever think that voting for Trump is a smart idea. I just can't bring myself to viewing a person that is comfortable with white supremacy and white supremacists as a potential ally, hence my aversion to Trump.
I agree that Harris would be an excellent choice, but I also feel that Demmings, Duckworth, Cortez-Mastro would be excellent choices.
I believe any young Black person that doesn't strongly support Biden over Trump is making an enormous mistake. I believe that President Obama will be large in having people develop comfort with Biden's VP choice and in driving support for Biden among African Americans and Latinos.

(3,635 posts)out of touch, which is not helpful in suring up his weaknesses with younger voters, progressives and others.
During the primary he had several such moments, which he obviously recovered from, but a general election is a different ballgame and Trump/GOP/Russians will work overtime to weaponize such gaffes to divide the base.
The Obamas will play a crucial role, I agree.

(50 posts)I'm confused by DUers who think this was a bad move. On a day where Tara Reade has been fully discredited and the biggest gotcha that Trump was trying to spring has been neutralized, the last thing he needed to do was overshadow the news that he had been targeted by a grifter and liar who had been exposed. I read his apology and thought he handled it well. Hopefully the news cycle will be short on this one.

(8,275 posts)Frankly, anybody making a super big deal out of this, even if they're purportedly on our side of the aisle - needs to stop and think: Are you REALLY serious about attacking the only way we have - to get rid of trump? You REALLY want to do that? Seriously?

(3,056 posts)He's got a damn good record on this, and I really think he was being baited by the "what have you done for me lately" bullshit. I teach in a Title 1, city high school, with a VERY diverse student body, and I happen to be white. I have a great relationship with a vast majority of my students because they know they can count on me to have their back when they're right, and point them in the right direction when they're not. I hold their hands and let them rant about how hard it is to be a teen today, how their boyfriend/girlfriend is cheating on them, and that other stupid, crazy teacher they have that's driving them nuts. But once in a while, an "attitude queen" will accuse me of racism...usually because I also don't put up their bullshit in class. And you better believe that pisses me off, just like this back door charge of racism pissed off Joe. Because that's what the insinuation was...that Biden hasn't done enough for the Black community. And I agree with him...if you can't decide between Trump and Biden, sorry, but I'm old enough for the term "Uncle Tom" to come to mind.
But apologizing for it was probably a good move, if only to keep Trump's team of mouth breathers at bay.

(50 posts)CtG is very well known, as is The Breakfast Club, the radio show of which he has been a host for years. Most black people under 40 know who CtG is, are aware of his style of ambush-interviewing and know his schtick. I wouldnt say that he is a big voice, though going on TBC or being interviewed by CtG probably is analogous for younger black people to hopefuls having lunch at Sylvias with Rev. Al for some older black voters. We take note of who is invited and who says yes ... and no.

(95 posts)Nobody is a bigger Obama fan than me. But even he said some things the wrong way and walked them back, apologized, etc. (See my other post above for examples.) Listen to the whole interview and it was a good interview. And while it wasn't said just the right way, Biden's meaning was clear. I watched the entire interview. The host (Charlamagne tha God) did not blink an eye because he knew just what Biden meant, and he has since defended Biden. And Biden has been good enough to say he should have worded it better and does not and never has taken the African American vote for granted.
And then of course we have Trump, that disgusting Orange THING currently polluting the White House. That impeached, corrupt, racist, pathological liar, and fraud. That king of the birther movement currently attacking Obama, talking about "Obamagate", won't even have an event unveiling Obama's White House portrait, trying to undo every single thing Obama did including his healthcare program, who called white racists in Charlottesville "good people," who just AGAIN called Elizabeth Warren "Pochahontas" in one of his racist and crazy tweets, and on and on and on.
Joe is a perfect SAINT compared that digusting Orange Menace, and a very strong lifelong advocate for the African American community.

(8,090 posts)EVERY FUCKING ONE. It was an unforced error on Biden's part and he needs to watch his mouth. He's alreadly apologized too many times for saying stupid shit. I read recently that Biden's support with AAs was 81 percent; that leaves 19 percent to... vote for Trump? note vote? vote third party? The November election is WAR with Republicans so you - and every Democrat - better start fucking care about them lest we get four more years of Trump. Then in 2024, Pompeo or one of the grifter Trump kids.
