They got some money from me that one time but never again.

He has a house in an area called Macatawa, which is between Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan. It's a great, resort-y town.

The downside is that Dick DeVos owns most of the land in the area. Until a few years ago, there was significant open land where the Points West resort complex had once stood. About 10 years ago, DeVos decided to build new houses on the open area. My cousin, who was in his late 80s at the time, was a leader of the opposition because the new houses would block community access to Lake Macatawa and increase the already tight density.

Funny thing is, my cousin is a diehard Republican, though I'd say he is more in the Mitt Romney mode.

I'm not sure how many of them there are now and it's been several years since I've been up there. I think their Lake Macatawa access is pretty much gone. The good news is that there's a big community beach on Lake Michigan four houses down their street and that's still open. From where he lives, it's about a 15-minute walk down to the Big Red lighthouse on Lake Michigan.

Ward's granddaughters wedding reception was held in a tent on the Lake Macatawa lakefront, and now has a big house built on it about 12 years ago in October. It was truly a magical place for an event like that, and it's sad that the site is now built on. They even had the best porta-potties that I've ever seen.
