We're doomed. I just got back from the West End of Richmond, VA. I was masked, socially distant, all that stuff. In the plaza I was shopping in, here's what I saw: Asian Massage Parlor was open (how do you socially distance a massage?), saw a patron go in, unmasked. The hair and nail salon that advertises that they also have wine: two people going in, both unmasked. The bagel place: 11 people went in and out (including me); 3 were masked. The elderly couple in the handicapped parking spot; no masks. The family of four, all in American flag shirts with two kids under 3 in an SUV with Glock and HK stickers on the back; no masks. The 2nd wave is going to hit us so hard...

(2,375 posts)Line up 6 feet apart outside, store employee letting people in only when the same number come out.
Now once inside: 10% of us wearing masks. Not just young people unmasked. Parents with kids AND elderly people not wearing masks. People not following the one way signs down the aisles and bumping into each other.
All the employees were wearing masks.
I got in and out as quick as I could and grabbed my hand sanitizer when I hit the truck.

(7,430 posts)Fascism dictates that the economy is more important than human lives. The economy isn't for us. It's for the wealthy. Our lives change; the lives of the wealthy stay the same. They're still making money hand over fist while the rest of us are squeaking by, and others are a few weeks from the food lines.
Here's a dark set of predictions:
So we'll see a spike in about a week or 10 days. The spike will not decline. It will continue to rise, or plateau at best. Then governors, especially the GOP governors, will have to decide to shut down again, which will be extremely expensive. Some GOP states will stay open and watch their dead citizens' bodies pile up. But they'll be able to order fried chicken dinners. It will take time, but eventually, even the GOP states will show alarm over the spiking CV deaths. Quite likely, renewed shut down orders will be issued around mid-summer, when states will just refuse to take it anymore. And THEN... the long anticipated autumn resurgence of CV will blow back from the hinterlands. More thousands will die.
Some economists are commenting that Trumpy-boy has NO IDEA what the economy will look like in 4 months. But they are telling us that it will NOT expand to anywhere near pre-CV levels. The more likely scenario is that the economy will shrink, with a depression and deflation two of the more predictable features. Right now, the stock markets are artificially high, based upon the Trump Administration's happy talk. But happy talk is a fool's errand that will soon collapse when investors are faced with a brick wall of economic death. Then there will be no words powerful enough to fend off the inevitable. Trumpy-boy will be known for his two-pronged failures: the economy and the coronavirus. He'll pull the rest of the GOP into the swirling eddy of chaos and breakdown. And all of it will be well-deserved.

It's going to look like it's all well and good, except in the homes where people are dying. But that's republicans for you: as long as it's not reported on Fox "news", then it doesn't really exist.

(42,770 posts)will die excruciating deaths alone. Too many loved ones can not be by bedsides. And if it gets worse, we will need a full fledged epidemiologist to run for President. At the very least, a medical/scientist VP with strong management skills and an awesome plan to dig us out whether they happen to be born male or female!

(100,043 posts)The first is that there's a long first wave followed by a series of smaller waves.
The second is that it plays out just like the Spanish flu - one long first wave, one long second wave, then a smaller third wave.
The third is a series of slow burns which could last until the next decade.
Judging by the way things are going I would say that the second scenario is most likely. We don't know what this thing is going to do but it seems like we're headed that way.

(21,529 posts)The battle against covid is over. The country has given up and decided grandma can go to hell, i want my ice cream cone.
i went out to pick up pizza for dinner. wore a mask. there is a ice cream parlor next door. walk up (not inside at least). it was PACKED in the parking lot. people crowded together in line, only two were wearing masks. i couldn't get the hell away from there fast enough. and the crowds on TV at the beaches and along the boardwalks...... they are already tracing outbreaks to mothers day gatherings and they were NOTHING like this.
america has decided, it isn't fighting covid anymore. we'll just let it kill who it kills but we're going to have our ice cream and walk on the beach
i feel like all the hard work we did, all the sacrifices, the massive bailout package.... we are flushing all the hard work we did right down the toilet.
my wife was supposed to have a follow up CT scan for lung nodules in april. we delayed until mid june because of the requests for people to put off elective procedures. now she is terrified it won't be safe to go out in three weeks when the next spike hits from this irresponsible people spreading the virus. meanwhile we just keep hoping whatever is in her lungs isn't cancerous.......

My dad lives in a redder rural area and masks are sparse.

The price of Covid-19!
If you spin this wheel with 100 markers, 5 of them will result in death, 5 of them will result in permanent damage, and maximum level suffering.
The other 90 you will remain alive, but still a fucking jackass, are you ready to spin?
