it's certainly true that he was notably middle class, modest and frugal for most of his life, and it's important that he avoided enriching himself despite his decades in washington.

however, he and jill have earned millions from their books. it's a rather recent change for them, but they're actually rich now.

that said, it's hard to forget what "middle class" means when you've lived your whole life that way.
